The subject matter I picked is about a thing that becoming popular on the market – blind box culture. As we know Blind Box means you don’t know which specific design from a series you might be receiving. The boxes and/or bags are sealed, and we don’t know which toy is inside them. Until the product is purchased and the package is opened. I figured that nowadays, no matter kids or adults, many people are interested in buying blind box. There are more and more forms of blind boxes appear on the market. Except those typical figure prototypes or kids’ toys, other things have been made into blind box as well. Especially the “flight ticket blind box” in China, truly aroused my interests in figuring the commercial myth behind blind box culture. How the merchants promote their products? How they attract people with the design, and the business mode. Why do people want to spend money on some uncertainty things? How the type of blind box products captures people’s heart? For the first point, I analyzed the packaging design of blind box, just as what we did in class, to analyze a picture. I go through the design styles and talk about how they attract consumers. For the second point, I talked about how the blind box merchants promote the products. How does the specific design elements help? How their selling modes attract consumers? How the derivative product- the showcase helps to promote the selling of bind box? For third point, I draw force the mythical system behind blind box. According to the book Visual culture, chapter 5: Semiotics. My fourth point is to analyze why consumers want to buy blind box, why they want to spend money on some uncertain things? Moods of Surprise, expectation, and excitement are what bind box could provide to people. They are all positive moods that we need in our life. My last point is about how social media help to promote the business of blind box. Use some of the knowledge we’ve learned from last two week’s class. Why people want to share their experience of buying blind box on social media? Is that a kind of psychological comparisons between people? Overall, I’ve learned a lot from this class. Especially how to figure and analyze the myth behind a picture, a business brand or a theory. Citations: Google search. (n.d.). Unlike other public platforms, Wechat is not a typical public social media, if you want to talk to someone on Wechat, you have to add him or her into your friend list. For most of the time, you know everyone who is on your wechat list in real life. In the US, it’s more appropriate to communicate with your professor or boss through email, instead of through Facebook or Instagram. But you could contact your friends and family members through these kinds of social media. Most social media have its own attributes, which platform will you use to get in touch with someone, depending on what is your relationship with him or her. On WeChat, it’s suitable for you to communicate with everyone in different types of relationships with you. Your family members, your friends, classmates, your boss or teachers. You could talk with others about anything on wechat, you could just chat for fun, for relaxation with your friends, or you could send your coworkers an emergency message about your work or have a serious conversation on Wechat. In that case, most people will keep their Wechat login every moment, and check it frequently, just in case someone would want to connect you in an emergency. Wechat is a good place to manage or notice about your interpersonal relationship. The number of people on your contact list is probably the number of people you’ve ever met or know in your life until now. The person you connect with the most on wechat, is probably your most intimate person. If a person removes you from his or her wechat friend list, that means he /she just wants to end the relationship with you in real life. Wechat represents each person’s most complete relative network. Another function is wechat called “moment”. It’s a place that allows you to post something, basically about yourself and your life. Most of my wechat friends like to post something about their life, share beautiful pictures they’ve taken, meals they made, what restaurant or place they’ve been to today, an article or a song they love, their thoughts about life, basically everything they want to share with people who they know. You could click like or post comments under your friend’s posts. People are always happy to receive likes under their posts, that may give them a sense of achievement, and make them feel like they are receiving recognitions from others. If you click “like” under your friend’s posts, except means that you recognized what his/her posted, that also means you want to maintain a good relationship with him/her in real life. Because the thing you posted could be seen by people that you know each other in real life, you always want to maintain a good image about yourself on Wechat. You have to think about what people who know me will think about me if they see my posts. What will your boss or professors think about it? What will your friends or classmates think about it? What will your parents think about it? What you are posting should make everyone feel comfortable, and should be accepted by people in any kind of relationship. I personally want people to think I’m a person who loves life, so I will always post something that is related to my life. Some people want others to think they are the wise man who always has some profound thoughts, so they always love to write down their thoughts in wechat. What you post may reflect your attitude, value about life and what you want to be like in other’s eyes. quge Uncategorized Leave a comment April 25, 2021 3 Minutes REFLECTION OF BONNIE SIEGLER’S LECTURE Bonnie Siegler’s lecture makes me learn that “design” is also a way to participate in politics. I’m a person who never cares about or participates in politics, I thought politics is a serious thing that I will never get any pleasure out of. Pictures that Bonnie showed in the lecture were super interesting, creative and powerful. Made me believe that people in the society, especially designers and artists, could present themselves, and their opinions through their design works. Those humorous pictures of Trump make me laugh a lot. To express your political opinions, we don’t have to argue over words with each other, or even use degrading or insulting language, or yell and scream at people. Sometimes a creative and humorous artwork could do much better in expressing yourself. Humor is the best way to dissolve all conflicts. I also like her opinion that young people should have their own political opinions and express themselves actively. Because young people are the hope of promoting the future of the country and making it develop in a better direction. Her lecture changed some of my opinions too. Now, I believe people who love to be involved in politics is not because they are radical, it’s because they are more socially responsible. Their actions contribute to the future of the country, and to the future of people’s life. As an international student who comes from another country, this kind of lecture is fresh and new for me, but I’m glad to learn and see the different aspects of this world through the experience of study abroad. America is a complicated country, this land almost includes every race, every cultural group in the world. I could have a chance to communicate with people from different cultures here, that’s an impossible thing when I was in my own country. Social diversity is not a bad thing, but it requires everyone’s stronger tolerance to each other, and the better ability of understanding people who are different from you. I am often curious about how American feel, as they grow up in a society that is full of diversity. I grew up in a single cultural group, everyone around me has the same look, same language, and has the total same cultural background with me. The first year I came to the U.S, I was so shocked by how everyone looks so different with each other. For the U.S, Racial issues still have a long way to go. Every country has its own society problems right now. This world is not perfect so far, but at least we could make it getting better through the improvement of education and the ability of radical thinking. quge Uncategorized Leave a comment April 16, 2021 2 Minutes CHOOSE A STREET AND START A 30 MINUTES WALK. For this week’s class, we are required to choose a street to work, go straight for 30 minutes. The street I chose called “Welch Ave”, is where my apartment is located. It’s a popular place in Ames, people call this campus town. It’s known for numerous bars, international restaurants, and different kinds of stores. It’s the one of the best places for relaxing or dating in Ames. Literally you could do anything you want for internment here. It’s a place always noisy, with many people walking by, shouting and singing with groups. These may happen especially at the night of Friday and Saturday. Students like to choose here for entertainment with friends, relax from schoolworks. You could also try foods from other cultures on this street as well. During my walking, I especially paid attention to what kind of entertainment service there, what kind restaurant there, and what kinds of emotions or feelings they brought up to me. For example, when I saw Copyworks, where I always printed my school projects. It makes me think about how hard my projects are, and how many nights I just need to stay up late to complete all of them. In this case, when I saw Copyworks, I could think about the feeling of exhaustion. When I saw Wok N Roll, a Chinese restaurant, I would think that they serve spicy hotpot there, that’s the flavor of my hometown. I will feel homesick when I see this restaurant. When I see “tea-time”, the milk tea store, I will think about how I always meet friends here. It gives me a feeling of happiness and is memorable. When I see a Japanese restaurant, and Italian restaurant, I will feel curiosity, because I’m not familiar with their foods, I would like to try. I believe other people have the same feelings when they see flavors from other cultures. There are a lot of bars on this street, so the feelings I come up with are noisy, relaxing, excitement, surprise and entertainment. Overall, it’s a street full of diversity, crazy, and you could always try something new. By the way, my apartment is here, so the street could also give me a feeling that I want to rush to my room and take a good rest. On the other side of the road, I didn’t see a lot of bars or stores, all I could see were some normal restaurants, trees, flowers, churches, and apartments for people to live. The atmosphere is kind of quiet, peace and calm. There is a sharp contrast between two sides of the street. I use both symbols and texts to express the emotions and feelings about this street and combine them into one graph. It’s pretty subjective, just according to my own feelings. quge Uncategorized Leave a comment April 12, 2021 2 Minutes PROJECT C: INTERROGATION For this project, I use illustrated symbols to express my topic of autism. My booklet could be divided into six parts: Misunderstanding, facts, symptoms, problem, and solutions. For the misunderstanding part, I describe some misunderstandings that people may have according to autism. For example, some people may think, autism just means people who are introverted and quiet, don’t like to talk or communicate with others. A portion of people may not consider autism as a serious disorder, they thought it could easily recover, if autistic children could frequently hang out with other kids. For the facts part, I clarify those misunderstandings with reliable facts. Genetics is the main cause of autism; autistic children are born with autism. Living environment and education are not the main factors, almost doing nothing with autism. Until now, medical science hasn’t yet found out the exact cause factors of autism. The only thing has been confirmed is that it should be a genetic disorder, not caused by upbringing. Until now, autism couldn’t be fully recovered. The only thing patients could do is improve living ability through therapy and training. Then, I explained some typical symptoms that autism may have. For example, They have a difficult time with social and communication, It’s hard for them to express what their feelings or needs accurately, and they can’t really understand other people’s emotion, or respond to others. They may have an intellectual disability, Most people on the autism spectrum have repetitive behaviors. They may also have self-injurious behaviors, and aggressive behaviors. People with autism may face problems like, unable to follow society rules, have to accept people’s strange eyes, disdain or blaming, when they act differently in public places. They are unable to go to normal school, or easily get a job when they grow up. Most of autistic people need someone to take care of them for their whole life, they could be in danger to stay alone, even for just several minutes. For solution, I could think about building some special care areas for them, especially in some public places. They are extremely sensitive to crowds, bright lights, or loud noises. A quiet area for them to stay will protect them from noisy crowds and help them to calm down. Will also rescue them from other people’s strange eyes. We could set up more special policies for them. Also, we could increase the number and quality of special schools. And there should be a way to reduce the costs of treatment. The goal of my booklet is to allow notice the fact of autism. If people don’t know the fact, they will not take it seriously, or be understandable and respect patients and their family. We should call on everyone to understand the facts and pay attention to autism, through the media. We should know what it’s autism, what the symptoms, and what difficulties are they suffering. The world is constituted by diversity, we should do our best to make everyone feel inclusive. It’s hard for autistic people to change themself, but it’s not hard for us to take a little change. If everyone could change a little bit for them, they will feel more inclusive and fit in. * * * * * * * * * * quge Uncategorized 1 Comment April 5, 2021April 5, 2021 2 Minutes RESEARCHES FOR PROJECT C When I searched the word “autism” in google image, I always could see those colorful puzzles show up in articles or videos that talk about autism. According to the research, it’s a symbol of autism awareness. Then, I took a guess about the meaning of those colorful puzzles, and how the symbol related to autism. I guessed those colorful puzzles represent different personalities of people, different aspects of society, although we are different, but we always can be connected as a whole. People with autism look different, but everyone in this world is different in their own way, we should tolerate the differences between individuals. Another guess is, although people with autism have difficulties with social interaction and communication, but it’s not because they are stupid, it’s because they immerse themselves in their world. Their own inner world is complicated and colorful, just like those colorful puzzles. Then I found the real meaning of this symbol: “The puzzle piece pattern reflects the complexity of the autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition.” This image is pretty straight forward, using illustrations to show people the symptoms of autism. Signs that are created by illustration style always create a feeling of relaxation. When I first saw this image, it gave me a sense like, it’s not a big deal, what it is representing is just a very common disease with some less – severe symptoms. In this case, I think this image is not enough to present the difficulties and the specification of autism. The pain and struggles of people with autism, does not show up strongly in this illustration. The person in the second scene is just like suffering from a headache, in the fourth scene is just like he feels cold, in the last scene, it seems like he just feels sad. Actually, autism is a genetic disease that can’t be cured. People with autism in this society could suffer more pain that we could imagine. This image came from an article that introduces children with autism. Children with autism may lack common sense, adequate social skills, the ability to communicate well, and not be able to cope with everyday life situations with appropriate responses. In this image, we could see a little boy stay by himself, it seems like he lost in thought and immerse in his own world. Children and adults behind him are interacting with each other and playing happily together. This picture could evoke people’s sympathy to the little boy, and aware that children with autism truly have problems with adequate social skills, they need tolerance and special care from all of us. The brand that Justin chose is Louis Vuitton, one of the most famous luxury brands in the world. People from different countries know this brand, so he doesn’t need to introduce what it is, and what’s the function of it. The brand I chose to analyze is an Asian goods website, which is only famous in a particular cultural group. So, in my presentation, I had to make a long introduction to the class about what Yamibuy is, and what’s the function of it. Since Louis Vuitton has a long history, Justin’s analyzation pretty much based on the historical stories of Louis Vuitton. Like how the brand was built, and the design experience of Louis Vuitton. On my side, Yumibuy is a website that was founded eight years ago, It’s not a brand with a long history. It’s just a shopping website without many design elements in it. So, my analysis is pretty much based on the marketing experience, emotional effect and practical functions that Yumibuy has brought to Asian Americans. Justin also analyzed the brand from the aspect of its current influence to the world. Something that impressed me in the presentation was, he mentioned that Louis Vuitton has 43 million followers on Instagram but has only followed 5 users. From this point, Justin analyzed the relations between signifier, signified, and sign behind Louis Vuitton. I really like this point that he brought up in the presentation, it’s unique and novelty. If we want to know a brand better, we could always go to check it’s Instagram. The similarities of our presentation are, we both researched about the foundation experience of two brands, and what’s their impact on society today. quge Uncategorized Leave a comment March 21, 2021 1 Minute WEEK 7 BLOG_ARTGR520 I chose “Yamibuy” to do the research and analysis. Yamibuy is a website that sells Asian goods online. It’s a website that sells Asian goods online. They import goods for buyers from China to the U.S. Consumers are able to buy pure Chinese goods with low shipping costs. The reason why I want to do analysis about Yamibuy is, I lived with two Chinese girls, and I could see different sizes of packages with the words “Yamibuy” on it, appearing in front of our apartment door every week. Almost all the Chinese students that I know love to use this website a lot. So, I began to be curious, how and why Yamibuy became that famous and widely used in Chinese international student community? Yamibuy was founded by Alex Zhou, a Chinese international student who graduated from Kansas State University in 2011. The reason why he founded this company, was just because he found it was inconvenient for him and other Chinese students to buy Asian products in where he lived. Even the nearest Asian market had to take almost two hours driving to arrive. Actually, I could feel how the situation frustrated him. This is my fifth-year study abroad, and I stick to going to Asian food stores in Ames each week, to buy ingredients for Chinese style dishes. I’m glad that there are 5 Asian food stores in Ames for me to shop. Although they are not big, that’s enough for me, at least I don’t have to drive two hours to get my ingredients. The required reading introduced about Barthian Myth, I’ve been trying so hard to understand everything in this chapter, it’s just like a philosophy course for me. I followed the reading and tried to go deeper analyze the company of Yamibuy. Barthian Myth is just like layer after layer, and the ideas go deeper by deeper. After learning Saussurian semiotics, relationship between “signifier”, “signified” and “sign”, and Barthes’s theories, I could understand a brand more deeply, and figure the meanings behind it. Previously, I thought Yamibuy was just a website that could buy Asian goods. But after analyzing it, I know that Yamibuy could relate to homelike feeling, cultural custom, and cultural propaganda, etc. Furthermore, we could consider it as the result of man-made history, and the development of worldwide relations. I’m going to compare mine with Kiana’s. I’m going to compare our designs through three aspects: function, color, and style. Function: My map is more about entertainment, it could become a decorative element appearing in public places for people to see when they have time. My map places emphasis on expressing a sense, a thought, an idea of our lives, instead of for navigation. Kiana’s map is more practical, it could actually be used for navigation of the trail. Although it’s not very detailed, through her map, you could tell what’s on this trail, what’s in what direction, and what’s this trail mainly about. My encoding starts with the mind, Kiana’s encoding starts with the reality. Color: I really like the use of color for Kiana’s map, it successfully creates a feeling of gentle, calm and poetic. The use of the color really matches up with the trail that she encodes for, which includes many beautiful sceneries and plants. If I’m a tourist for hiking, and get a trail map like that, I will be looking forward to getting on the trail. The use of color on my map is abundant and busy, that may create a feeling of fancy and jollification. Because I want to express a feeling of richness and diversity in our lives. In the aspect of color usage, both of us use colors that match our own topic, theme and main idea. My colors may make the audience associate with subway lines; her colors may make the audience associate with beautiful landscapes. Style: My map is encoding by simple icons, each icon stands for a meaning. Kiana’s map is encoded by beautiful illustrations. My icons are quite abstract, sometimes you need to guess the meaning of them. Kiana’s illustrations are more straightforward, you could immediately understand what’s the meaning of those drawings. The structure of my design is quite busy, there is too much going on in my map, and some extra decorations. Kiana’s design style for this project is clean and tidy, it’s more comfortable and relaxed for people to read. The biggest similarity is, in our design, we both contained a table beside the main map that clearly indicates what each element stands for in the map. Both our designs were based on a specific existing thing. Kiana was inspired by the route of a trail place; I was inspired by the subway lines of Beijing. quge Uncategorized Leave a comment February 27, 2021 2 Minutes POSTS NAVIGATION Older posts Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com.
