HOLIDAY CHEER

For many investors, 2024 so far has proved to be a very good year. Stocks, gold,
and even cryptocurrencies have all posted strong performances. Stock markets
benefited from robust earnings and moderating inflation. Technology stocks, in
particular, led the charge among equities, fueled by excitement about artificial
intelligence (AI). Gold’s appeal as a safe haven grew along with geopolitical
tensions, while cryptocurrencies made a surprising rebound despite regulatory
scrutiny, as investors sought growth opportunities in an otherwise steady
market.

’Tis the season to be jolly?

Although there’s no guarantee—particularly in the wake of such a strong fall
rally—the stock market tends to end the year on an upswing, which traders have
dubbed the “Santa Claus rally.” The reasons behind the phenomenon aren’t clear.
It could be profit-boosting holiday spending, end-of-year optimism, or
expectations creating a self-fulfilling prophecy (unless and until fundamental
realities take over).

Happy New Year

As the new year dawns, the January effect often brings a surge in small-cap
stocks and high-growth sectors. The phenomenon, first identified in the 1940s,
reflects the tendency for stock prices—particularly those of smaller
companies—to rise during January. The effect is often attributed to tax-loss
harvesting, where investors sell underperforming stocks at year-end to offset
taxable gains, creating buying opportunities as the new year begins.

Economies run on cycles

Seasonal cycles such as the Santa Claus rally, the January effect, and even the
four-year presidential cycle, which tends to favor the third year of a
presidential term, are mini-cycles within the four-phase economic cycle.
Whatever you call it—boom and bust, expansion and contraction, or bull and bear
markets—a nation’s economy will expand, hit a peak, descend through a recession,
hit a trough, and then expand anew. Some cycles are more pronounced (and last
longer) than others, but they always repeat. And no matter how often you hear,
“It’s different this time,” history has shown that it never is.
