VIETNAM VETERANS' DAY ON 18 AUGUST

We commemorate the service of almost 60,000 Australians who served in Vietnam
over the 10 years Australia was involved in the war. More than 500 died, and

COWRA BREAKOUT IN AUSTRALIA ON 5 AUGUST 1944

In the early hours of a frosty morning, more than 1,000 Japanese men broke out
of the intern camp at Cowra. It was the biggest mass escape in World War II.

MAXINE STONES'S VETERAN STORY

Maxine was in charge of the galley when HMAS Jervis Bay transported Australian
peacekeepers and their equipment to Somalia in 1993.


ROBERT ZWIKIELBERG'S VETERAN STORY

Robert enjoyed being a submariner in a small crew and served on both Collins and
Oberon class submarines.

CAPTAIN ALFRED JOHN SHOUT VC MC AT GALLIPOLI IN 1915

Alfred was awarded the Military Cross for the Battle of the Landing and the
Victoria Cross for the Battle of Lone Pine.
