For customers who are running Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or newer in a Virtual
Machine, you may have noticed that you can no longer set a custom display
resolution beyond the default 1024x768 in either VMware Fusion and vSphere,
regardless of the amount of video memory that has been allocated. The reason for
this behavior is that Apple has changed the way in which it remembers previously
used modes and would automatically fall back to this versus retaining the custom
mode using the Display Preferences.

Given this is a non-trivial fix, VMware Engineering has been working hard on a
providing a workaround which would still allow users to set a custom resolution
from within the GuestOS. The workaround that has been developed is a
tiny standalone command-line utility called vmware-resolutionSet which runs
within the Mac OS X Guest and allows you to configure a custom display
resolution. You will need to ensure you have VMware Tools installed and running
before you can use this utility. As of right now, customers can get a hold of
this utility by filing an SR with VMware Support and referencing PR 1385761.
Although this tool has not been officially released and must go through the
standard release process, the plan is to include it in a future update of VMware
Tools and will available for use with both VMware Fusion and vSphere. UPDATE
(12/11/15)- Thanks to reader @elvisizer, it looks like the latest VMware Fusion
8.1 release now includes an updated version of VMware Tools (10.0.5) which
includes the vmware-resolutionSet utility. You can find it under

If i go into standby its still connected, but if i unmount it or restart the
computer, its lost again; it wont connect. Not sure what to do in this
situation, I need everything on this HD and I know everything is still intact
because I can use it on other computers. But I really need to make it work on
this computer again.

down your iMac, then remove disconnect anything else to the iMac - USB leads,
mouse, printers etc. Remove the power cable from the back of the Imac. Then wait
for 15 seconds - then plug the power lead back into the iMac and attach all
other leads again and start up.

And thats it - hope this helps as this problem drove me crazy with the WD drive

up. The Passport light blinks for a while, then goes steady. Looking at the

and then a message appears at the top of my computer saying, backup failed. I am

I replaced my old passport with a brand new one as this was my issue with the
old one (about 3 years old). However, with the same message coming up on this

Hi RCDief It sounds like you may be having a different problem to the one I had
- mine was more about not the right amount of power getting to the Passport,
hence resetting the SMC did help - nevertheless - you could try simply a
different USB Port on your mac, or even the USB port on your keyboard if you
have a wired one. It might be worth just resetting the SMC one more time, it
doesn’t take long and could work this time. Othe than that, make sure you have
the latest firmware update for the Passport. Wish I could be more help as it is
very frustrating when it doesn’t work.

GIMP One of the topmost recommendations you’d read for a tool like Photoshop is
GIMP, and for good reason. GIMP, or GNU Image Manipulation Program is a very
feature rich photo editing and creative tool that can do almost everything that
Photoshop can, and brings in everything from the popular Adobe software to a
free and open-source software. However, GIMP isn’t my top choice for a Photoshop
alternative because it has a bunch of issues as well, most annoying of which is
the fact that multiple preset brushes share the same settings, which gets
annoying if you’re constantly switching between brushes. Also, GIMP doesn’t have
the drawing capabilities of Photoshop. It’s free though, and is definitely worth

While you can make preset brushes, the brushes themselves to not have separate
settings so you have to repeatedly load the formatting to each brush each time
you swap. So say you are swapping to the eraser from the brush, has the same
formatting as the brush. This is annoying and takes up a bit more time. I use
Gimp to edit pictures I make on other alternatives. Gimp does give you the
ability to edit as if you are using Photoshop but doesn’t have the drawing
capability of other programs IMO just because of this tedious problem by itself.

The Best alternative to photoshop for the very cheap cost is Corel Paint Shop
Pro I use it for many years, upgrading to a newer version almost every year. I’m
a professional photographer and digital artist. I’m advanced photoshop user as
well. But Paint shop pro is a program I use 90% of the time. It is much
lighter(faster and easy to use in terms of conrols).

For me there is nothing I can’t do in it that I want to. It does everything that
photoshop does and even more (for example I like the fact that I can zoom image
in and out just by rolling my mouse, instead of using the key to zoom in
photoshop, I can do much more with finger tool and so on.). The only thing you
may have issue with, if you like me use a lot of large files at once and keep
program open 24/7, it may start to run out of memory and don’t run plugins (yes
photoshop plugins do work with this program).

But most people don’t use it this heavy I guess. I know there is tons of
tutorials on their site, if someone want to see if it is a right fit. NOt sure
if they have a free trial version, but if somoene is interested they can check.
Funny how the writer calls ‘Paint Shop Pro’ an alternative, however paint shop
pro was and is the leading profit earner in this category, more than Photoshop.
Photoshop is the alternative.

A second Hacker News reader inquired about MonoDevelop, asking: 'Has Microsoft
announced whether MonoDevelop will still be open source?

It gets’ royalties from Adobe for use of patents, just like Corel does with
Microsoft word from WordPerfect (which imho is a way better product). Photopaint
is the highest grossing graphic design app on the planet all they have to do is
put a product in the market to hold on to their patent. How’s that for smart!

BEST VIDEO CAPTURE CARD FOR MAC PRO

I'm trying to use an external capture card to stream my Xbox one gameplay to
twitch with a simple webcam overlay. As a macbook pro owner, I.

Verify which model of the Mac Pro you own. If you own the 1,1 or 2,1 Mac Pro
your options are limited to a few GPUs: • Nvidia GT 120 • Nvidia 8800 GT • AMD
Radeon 7950, 7970 or R9 280X if you have installed OS X Mavericks or newer via
hack methods. We do not provide these methods, but information about them is
readily available online.

If you own the 3,1, 4,1, or 5,1 Mac Pro you can utilize any of GPUs we sell
except for the GT 120 and 8800 GT mentioned above. Please be aware that while
the 3,1 Mac Pro has the same GPU compatibility as the 4,1 or 5,1 that the older
hardware of the 3,1 will result in some comparative bottlenecking. In general I
recommend the GTX 770 as the high end for the 3,1 Mac Pro as it maintains its
price/performance ratio. If you prefer the ports or other features of a more
powerful card it may still be worth considering.

'Available', 'supported', and 'will work' are three very different things. The
officially compatible video cards for the original (1,1) Mac Pro are: • NVIDIA
GeForce 7300 GT • ATI Radeon X1900 XT • NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 (and family) •
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT These are the only cards that are supported in an
original Mac Pro. Unfortunately, most are not particularly available any more.

Apple no longer sells any of these cards, except the Quadro FX family (which is
super-expensive and not consumer-oriented). I believe most, if not all, of the
above officially supported cards are all Apple-specific variants. There are
various non-Apple versions of the above, which may or may not work in a Mac Pro,
depending on firmware compatibility (sometimes it is possible to program a
Mac-compatible version of the firmware into a non-Apple card's non-volatile
flash, thus enabling the use of a non-Apple version in the Mac Pro). But the
bottom line is that it is not really possible to purchase these cards anymore
(except for the super-expensive Quadro FX and maybe a small quantity of the
others that can be found used on Amazon or eBay). That said, there is at least
one other card that is currently (as of Summer 2011) available that will work in
an original Mac Pro. Although it is not listed as being officially compatible
(and therefore not officially supported), there are numerous accounts in the
Apple online store from customers who have reported that the works just fine
out-of-the-box in their original Mac Pros.

I too purchased one from a local Apple Store and installed it in my original Mac
Pro (running OS X 10.6.7), so I can state for a fact that this card does work
just fine, and it doesn't require any hacking (no drivers to install, no
firmware to be flashed) -- it just works right out of the box. It also performs
quite a bit better than the older officially compatible cards.

It also works just fine in Windows under Boot Camp (after downloading and
installing the Boot Camp drivers from the ATI/AMD website). The only caveat (and
it is a very minor one) is that the installation instructions that accompany the
card deviate somewhat from what is actually required in the original Mac Pro,
due to minor variations between the internals of the older Mac Pros and the
newer ones.

For instance, the instructions mention sliding a PCI cage (to move a retention
bracket), but the bracket is not present, and the cage doesn't move in the
original Mac Pro (each PCI slot has it's own small retention 'clip' instead).
Also, the power connector on the motherboard is in a different location in the
original Mac Pro. If you do some research, you will find various other reports
of users having success with other cards (especially various ATI Radeon
variants). Oftentimes, it involves updating the firmware (flashing). However,
the Radeon HD 5770 is the only currently available card I am aware of that will
work out of the box.

I can confirm, out of the Box AMD, Asus EAH 6850 DC/2DIS/1GD5, work on Mac Pro
1.1 OS Lion 10.7.5. I do have Apple ATI 5770 that dose all my video editing on
FCPx.

But looking for more GPU power. I should Note that a Evga GTX570 will also work,
i do have some problems with open gL. Its because the Card is 2.5 GB ram and Mac
OS turn off open gl on ram above 2 GB.There is a fix and its in the works. Check
printing software windows 10. The Only thing i would like to have from Nvidia
card is the Cuda Core, for Blackmagic Davinci Resolve.
