ABOUT THE CENTER

Mary Cassatt, The Sisters, 1885, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, public
domain.

Individuals with developmental disabilities have enriched the lives of their
families and communities through history, but rarely appear in published
historical works. While learning about specific individuals can be difficult, it
is not impossible. By gathering and combining records from a wide variety of
sources — local and state government, church, institutional and school records,
and private historical collections — life stories can emerge in vibrant detail.

The goals of the Center for Historical Experiences of Developmental Disability
are:

1) To help restore the voices of individuals with developmental disabilities to
the historical narrative, by creating biographies of their lives using
historical documents;

2) Through these biographies, to gain new insight into experiences of
developmental disability across time.
Our current focus is on the New England area of the United States, up to the
year 1900. View our list of individuals about whom we have information. Contact
