I bought this and used it for a week and it would no longer grind coffee beans.
I called OXO support and they said the grinder would not work with ANY KIND OF
OILY BEAN. I said I use Starbucks French Roast... and they said... oh... yeah...
the grinder will back up tight and be unusable if you use that kind of coffee
bean. They offered no solution... they did not call back when they said they
would. THIS IS AN AWFUL PRODUCT. They don't warn you that it won't work with
half of the coffee beans out there. I explained this would be a PR disaster when
the public realized how useless the product is for anyone that grinds espresso
or French roast or any other kind of oily bean. And they didn't seem to care.

(I am an ex professional barista.)
CONS:
-The grounds container doesn't lock into place and will sometimes vibrate out
during grinding. This is the only serious flaw with the product, and I feel it's
a minor one. I've gone through many of the reviews and it seems that it's simply
a matter of construction inconsistency. Most people's containers "click" into
place; a minority do not. I was just unlucky enough to get one of the ones that
don't.
-You can't remove the bottom burr to clean it. They really did do their best to
make this easy to clean and I appreciate that you don't have to undo a bunch of
microscopic screws just to clean your burrs, but I really wish I could remove
BOTH burrs to give them a thorough wipe-down. It's difficult to clean the one
that's stuck inside the grinder. The other lifts out easily by a cute little
handle.
PROS:
-High quality, consistent grind. The brewing methods I use most all hover around
the medium grind range, so I haven't really tested the extremes of coarse and
fine. Can't speak to those. But as far as the medium ranges, it grinds
beautifully and consistently. That's what matters in the end, right?
-The beans feed very well, even for single dosing. Never an issue.
-As mentioned above, the ability to clean the grinder is taken into account in
the construction. No need to delicately deconstruct the whole thing and keep
track of a bunch of itty bitty screws and springs. The top part of the grinder
and the top burr simply turn-and-lift out, and then turn-and-lock back into
place. So nice.
-It's aesthetically pleasing and takes up little room on the counter. All the
materials have a quality feel.
-It isn't super noisy. All grinders are gonna make noise, to be sure, but as far
as grinders go, this one has a pretty gentle sound. I've definitely used my fair
share of grinders that made me feel like my brain was going to vibrate out of my
skull, and this one has a polite hum by comparison.
-The price for this level of quality is unbeatable. I can't even believe I paid
less than one hundred dollars for this. Real talk, folks: these are steel
conical burrs. Solid construction. 40+ grind settings. Did I mention steel
conical burrs? I never thought I would own something like this for less than
$250. You cannot beat this price point/quality intersection. You just can't.
This grinder is price-meets-quality king.
USAGE:
You're working with three variables: time, grind, and amount. There are two
popular approaches to working out your dose.
Method 1: You leave 'amount' as the open variable. With this method, you dump
all your beans in the hopper and store them there. You then adjust grind and
time until you're getting the right dose at the right grind level.
Method 2: You leave 'time' as the open variable. With this method, you only
deposit the amount of beans you plan to use for each dose, adjust the grind as
needed, and let it take whatever amount of time it takes. You're adjusting the
amount and the grind, rather than adjusting the grind and the time. (This is
called "single dosing.")
Go to any coffee forum, and you'll be pages of debate about which of these
methods is superior. Honestly, you should use the method that feels best for
YOU.
The reason I bring it up here is because people seem anxious that Method #2 will
damage the burrs over time, since you run them all the way to empty every time
you grind.
Here's my take: I use Method #2, because I feel that the beans start to taste
stale if left in the hopper. (Everyone's tastebuds are different; there's no
right or wrong.) This means that I let the burrs run until I hear the sound
change from a low growl to a high pitched growl, which indicates that the burrs
are grinding empty, and then I manually stop the grind.
I honestly don't see any issue with this, and I don't feel any anxiety about it.
Think about it: if you're cleaning the burrs between bean swaps, you're letting
them run for several seconds on empty anyway. Even the manufacturer instructions
tell you to do this when cleaning the burrs! The only difference here is that
instead of intentionally running them on empty for several seconds to clean
them, you're running them on empty for one single second every day/dose. I'd
never recommend doing that on a fine espresso setting, but as long as you're in
the medium-to-coarse range, I don't see any possible ways the burrs could damage
each other. There's no way the burrs are touching at that distance, regardless
of variables like heat expanding the metal and other things coffee nerds like to
debate about.
I hope this review was helpful. I'll update in a year to let you know if this
grinder held up through daily use.

I bought this grinder because it offered a larger than normal hopper for the
whole beans and uses a burr grinder rather than a blade. It is capable of
grinding enough for a single cup or to grind 3/4 lb. per hopper fill. The
canister below, which contains the fresh grounds, will not hold all the ground
beans from a full hopper. I use this grinder to grind enough coffee for my mom
to use a simple coffee maker all week because my Grind&Brew is too complicated
and messy for her to use.. It is still new to me but I was so impressed by the
quality of the grinder that I decided to write this review. I believe, as long
as it is durable, that this is well worth the money I paid. By the way, Amazon
delivered it overnight by 05:15 and I was brewing my first cup before 06:00. I
highly recommend you purchase one if you're looking for a grinder that is
consistent, affordable, sleek and simple. The packaging came with simple
instructions right on the flap and that was all I needed to learn how to clean,
use and enjoy my new grinder. There is a user guide also, but my point is that
the machine is easy to understand. There is a video for this also, which lead me
to believe this was a loud grinder. It is actually fairly quiet considering what
is being done. It is nearly half as loud as my Grind&Brew for comparison. You
might need to make a few adjustment as you literally dial in your preferred
settings but once done, they stay where you want and all you need to do from
there is keep the hopper full and not overfill the lower canister. Easy Peasy!!!

After 6 months mostly daily use, the grind slowed down. Progressively slower,
until at the 9 month mark it was waaaay slow, like 45+ seconds for what was 15
seconds before. And less effective at producing varying fineness of grind.
Presumably it was clogged (or the burrs wore out dramatically fast), but my
repeated, progressively more aggressive attempts to clean it out didn't help.
Finally reached out to Oxo who after checking that I had done a full cleaning,
sent me a replacement unit (apparently new, not refurb). Advanced shipment with
a prepaid label for returning the bad unit. Nice.
I'm not dropping my rating because of the quick advance-exchange warranty
service, but the issue did verify my early concerns about the unit's design with
the fixed bottom burr and no access to the chamber beneath. If this happens
again within a few months, I'll update my review again and change my rating.
Note the unit has a 2-year warranty.

A decent conical burr grinder system.
It has a very consistent grind, is reasonably quiet & is easy to use. On the
negative, it's a little annoying to clean, with a quirky "timer" based on/off.
More details, and comparison to Baratza below.
After 6 weeks of daily use, I'm pleased (especially for the price) and I'm
"keeping" it. I can literally taste the more nuanced flavors from the more
consistent grind, using the same beans & serving sizes. I'm happy.
Good:
* Quiet for a grinder. Doesn't even make my cats' ears twitch.
* VERY consistent grind at all settings I used, from (barely) fine to
(moderately) coarse. This covers most of the grinds I use at home.
* Faster than the low-end Baratza.
* Grounds bin is stainless, minimizes static cling.
* Top bin seals tightly, in case you store more than a day's worth of beans in
it.
* Easy set up.
* Top bin has a nice locking mechanism.
* For oily/dark beans, it doesn't seem to catch any grinds inside the mechanism.
* Top bin & top burr both very easy to remove for cleaning.
Odd / bad:
* Bottom burr does NOT come out.
* Inside of mechanism is sealed, and the grounds path isn't straight, making
thorough cleaning a struggle.
* Timer backs up an instant-on button, rather than a normal on-off toggle.
* Non-oily / medium-roast beans seem to get caught in the mechanism (as much as
a full tablespoon+ of grounds) and the vendor solution of "run it empty for 10
seconds" doesn't help. You have to stop / start it a few times and a teaspoon of
grounds falls out each time. The machine works MUCH better with the oilier
dark-roast I normally use.
Thoughts on the timer: I'm a bit confused by other reviewers being used to this.
Do they go to the gas station & ask for "3 minutes of gas"? I guess if you tend
to walk away from your grinder, don't want to wait for a few seconds, it
provides a failsafe shutoff?
But I'd rather just have an on-off toggle like other brands. As it is, I set the
timer to 20s and use the instant on-off button normally. Timer dial & instant
on-off button pictured.
Thoughts on cleaning: With the dry beans, they seem to catch inside the
mechanism. You have to start/stop the device a few times (a single 10s run like
OXO suggests doesn't do the trick) and some more grounds come out each time.
Nobody using a burr grinder wants stale grounds...
It would have been VERY helpful if the bottom burr came out. Or if the front of
the device opened enough to allow it be brushed out. You can't brush it out from
the bottom (I tried with 2 kinds of brushes), the inside path is too curved.
You're left with two options:
1) run a small amount of uncooked rice through the unit, which will capture oils
and push along any trapped grounds. But it's an extra step and may wear down the
burrs.
2) Or you can turn the unit upside down, and try to shake/tap out the unit, but
this may also be bad for the mechanism's longevity. And it's a pain...
I came from an old KitchenAid flat burr grinder, and this conical system is more
consistent, much better at feeding itself without needing beans pushed down, and
is MUCH quieter.
I also tried the entry-level Baratza, which has a similar design. That one is
about half again more expensive, with a more traditional on-off switch & more
solid build. But is slightly louder, a bit slower, with a delicate silicone
gasket that has to be removed for every cleaning. The Baratza is slower-- which
might be a goal for burr purists, but may be an annoyance for the morning
coffe-hound.
Considering the price difference, the OXO is (so far) slightly superior for my
criteria.
At this price under the century mark, the OXO is an outstanding grinder. it's
reasonably small and aesthetic, and works well. Quirks aside, if you use the
same kind of beans I do, the cleaning issue seems addressable. Although the
design may limit the unit's lifespan, since you can't replace the bottom burr
and have to run it empty or on rice more often.
It could have been perfect, but as is I'm still happy to call it Recommended.

I was initially sceptical of this grinder because of reviews that said it didn't
handle oily beans well and is hard to clean. That has not been my experience at
all. Coincidentally, right after the grinder arrived, a friend gave me a bag of
dark, oily beans. I was hesitant at first but am now most of the way through the
bag and there is no accumulation inside the grinder at all.
I did prepare for the worst by figuring out ahead of time how to disassemble the
burr mechanism. It is a piece of cake - no need to remove the hopper, no tools
required, and the fine/coarse setting isn't affected. Once the inner cone is
removed, you can see that there is a straight, voluminous path to the output
bin, which was a relief after my previous grinder.
I brew with an Aeropress, so I use a pretty fine grind. It was easy to find a
suitable setting (about 2/3 along the coarse/fine scale, so lots of range left
if you need a really powdery grind.)
Next: noise. Again, I recall seeing this mentioned in some reviews. I honestly
don't know what these people were expecting. In my workplace we have two burr
grinders (a Rancilio Rocky and a Mazzer Mini Electronic.) Compared to the Rocky,
the Oxo is way quieter and takes much less time. Compared to the Mazzer I would
say that the Oxo is perhaps a bit quieter and takes about the same amount of
time to grind a double-shot's worth of beans.
I generally keep my beans in the bag and only put into the grinder as many beans
as I need right away, so the big hopper isn't useful to me.
The switch/timer works well: there's a central button and a dial around the
outside that lets you configure how long you want the grinder to run. Once
you've figured out how long it takes to grind a couple of shots' worth of beans,
you can leave the timer in that position forever. If you want the grinder to
stop before the timer expires, just press the central button again. (I saw one
review in which the reviewer complained that there is no way stop the grinder
without unplugging it - not so!)
One other thing that I appreciate: the ground beans drop into a metal bin, which
eliminates the static electricity that causes grounds to fly everywhere with my
old Delonghi.
So, to summarize: it's reasonably fast, unexpectedly quiet, seems well designed,
and is easy to use. Considering that the Rocky and the Mazzer in my office each
retail for ten times the price of this Oxo, I feel that the Oxo is great value.
Things that I'd change:
* There's nowhere to store the cord. The (commendably sturdy) cord doesn't play
well with the other things in the cupboard when I take the grinder out.
* The output bin sits on a little shelf on the front of the grinder, but the
keeper doesn't reliably stop the bin from sliding off of the shelf. So when you
pick up the grinder, you have to remember to hold onto the output bin with your
spare hand.
Update: after almost a year of daily use, the grinder is still working great and
I still love it. Occasionally I take the mechanism apart to check for
accumulation, but I haven't found any yet. Very happy with this purchase!

Bought to replace an annoying Breville grinder that never was consistent and
eventually blew a felt gasket somehow.
This is a great unit — relatively quiet (for something that’s smooshing little
coffee beans into powder) and very consistent so far.
I’ve used three different beans in it — one oily, one decaf, one drier — and all
have had great results.
I use my beans in a Breville Barista Express machine (using the non-pressurized
portafilter )and I have had great results once I’ve dialed it in. You have to
grind properly and tamp properly but you can easily get excellent thick espresso
shots with this combination.
I often tell people that the grinder is the most important part of the equation
for home baristas. Yes, you do need a sufficiently powerful machine. Regardless,
though, a crappy grinder will make your results frustratingly bad.
A good grinder is worth its weight in gold, imho.

I bought this for drip coffee, so I use it on medium (9). I really like how
every morning I can grind the same amount of coffee I need to brew one cup. It
doesn't get 5 stars because when I use the most coarse grind, the coffee
granules are not all the same size, which is what you're looking for when you
purchase a burr grinder. But for the medium grind (and because I don't think
I'll ever be much into French press), the granules seem to be roughly the same
size. Same for the finer grind. I also love that it's a one-button machine and
it doesn't take too much place on my counter top, and the noise level is
acceptable (I've had Cuisinart and Breville grinders which I find much noisier).
Most importantly, my coffee tastes great every time. Bottom line is I am very
happy with my purchase. Beginner's tip: if you only consume small amounts of
coffee on a daily basis, don't fill the grinder with beans to the top. I only
add a little at a time to last me a few days. Keep your beans in their air-tight
bag to avoid exposing it to oxygen which ruins coffee.)

The trouble shooting section states “Dark, oily beans can clog the grounds
chute”. Yes. Yes they will. And terribly. So if you like nice, dark, oily
coffee, then don’t buy this.
I just bought this attempting to replace my Breville BCG450XL, which finally
died after years of amazing use. The Oxo had great reviews online, so I thought
I’d give it a try. Clogging within days of receiving it. When it works, it’s
fine. But only being able to use certain beans well is a deal breaker. Going to
look into returning it.

so I had to increase the timer setting. The amount grounded is also les
consistent, sometimes grinding too much for the same setting.
I make my coffee with a Breville - Cafe Roma espresso machine. I set the grind
size to smallest which works great with my espresso machine while giving a
fairly strong coffee. I did not get any static so far. I used to grind my coffee
with a small 30$ blade grinder. This burr grinder is so much better, it's
definitely worth the extra money. So much less hassle (no need to transfer the
grounded coffee into a jar so it's also less messy) and the ground size is much
more even so there's less chances of clogging the portafilter and my espresso
now has and stronger and richer taste. I like the timer function (I preset it at
12 sec), I press the button and get just the right amount of grounded coffee for
a double. I wish they would have made the grounds container with a spout to pour
more precisely into the portafilter.
Good grinder, wished I bought it earlier.
