The Hudson County Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the State Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) and the US Department of Homeland Security, has scheduled a house of worship security program for January 31 at High Tech High School in Secaucus. The program, which runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., aims to provide security resources for faith leaders to protect their communities from a mass shooting. Speakers include Hudson County Attorney Esther Suarez, NJOHSP Division Director Thomas Hauck, NJOHSP Training & Exercise Bureau Randy Parkes, NJOHSP Operations Bureau’s Ehtasham Chaudhry, FEMA Faith-Based Coordinator Race Hodges and DHS Protective Security Advisor Dan Schultz. Topics include active shooter response training, new statutory emergency planning requirements for places of worship, and other key resources available to religious organizations. “As one of the most diverse communities in the country, Hudson County is a melting pot of all races, ethnicities and religions,” Suarez said. “Houses of worship should be safe places where individuals can freely practice their religion without concern for their safety. Along with our state and federal partners, we are committed to working with all faith leaders to ensure they have access to resources to protect and prepare their communities in an emergency.” Also read: New Jersey Requires Places of Worship to Have Safety Plans | New Jersey All Hudson County religious leaders, security coordinators and congregations of all faiths and denominations are invited to participate. Participants are asked to respond online here. “The House of Worship Safety Program is one of many NJOHSP initiatives aimed at ensuring New Jersey is a safe place to worship,” said NJOHSP Director Laurie Doran. “It is a collaborative effort coordinated with our federal, state, county and local partners to provide essential information, resources and connections to faith communities.” Late last year, state law was passed requiring mandated places of worship with more than 500 seats to have an emergency plan, and that plan must be approved by the local police department.
