MORE THAN A WOMEN’S ISSUE

MORE THAN A WOMEN’S ISSUE

MORE THAN A WOMEN’S ISSUE

We know there’s a gap—in hiring, in advancement, in pay—between men and women in
the workplace. But to truly bridge it, we have to stop thinking about the gap as
an “us vs. them” issue and start thinking about it as one that affects us all.

What is the Gender Gap?
Whether you’re looking at hourly pay, the number of female executives, or the
rate of hiring, the gender gap is painfully obvious.

Women are less likely to be hired for entry-level positions despite currently
earning more bachelor’s degrees than men.Women typically earn eighty cents for
every dollar a man earns, with the gap being even wider for women of color. For
every one hundred men promoted to manager, only seventy-nine women are
promoted.Among C-suite executives, one in five are women, and one in thirty are
women of color.

Started in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity, Equal Pay Day marks how
far into the following year women must work in order to make the same amount of
money men made in the previous year, falling on March 14 in 2023. According to
the American Association of University Women, other days have been added to the
calendar because the pay gap varies between different communities of women,
particularly women of color. Click here for the full list of dates.

Why Does it Matter to Everyone?
For years, the gender gap has been viewed as a women’s issue only. But seeing it
that way can work against progress by casting men as the enemy, which is
alienating and harmful. The truth is, we all benefit from equality because we
all benefit from work environments that prize inclusivity and progress.

Avivah Wittenberg-Cox, CEO of 20-first, a leading gender consulting firm, asks
these questions to help leaders consider the ways they can narrow the gender gap
in their own organizations:

Are you holding yourself accountable for the gap?Have you switched from
“maternity” leave to “parental” leave? Are you championing “women’s” networks or
balance networks? Are you bringing men and women together or pushing them apart?

Take Away: While the gender gap and the extra hurdles women face on the road to
success are undeniable, we must remember that bridging the gap has less to do
with holding men back so women might catch up and more to do with addressing
issues that will help everyone succeed together.
