By Chad Jennings and The Athletic Staff Apr 10, 2023 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Sox center fielder Adam Duvall suffered a broken wrist, coach Alex Cora said Monday. Here’s what you need to know: * Duvall suffered the injury Sunday against the Tigers while attempting to make a diving catch. He came up grabbing his left arm. * Additional tests are being conducted to determine whether there are other issues with the arm and whether surgery is necessary. * The 34-year-old is leading all Boston hitters in hits, runs, RBIs and batting average while matching Rafael Devers for the most home runs. * Duvall signed a one-year, $7 million deal with Boston in January. The Athletic’s instant analysis: HOW IMPORTANT HAS HE BEEN THIS SEASON? When the Red Sox signed him, Duvall was a fallback of a fallback, an offseason Plan C who already had become one of the most important pieces of their lineup. In the first nine games, he led the team with four home runs and 14 RBIs, providing much-needed right-handed power while capably filling their hole in center field. Advertisement Essentially, he was giving the Red Sox much-needed up-the-middle production after they failed to re-sign Xander Bogaerts and lost Trevor Story to injury. — Jennings WHO WILL STEP UP IN HIS PLACE? Now, they really don’t have an ideal replacement. Rob Refsnyder is playing center field Monday, but the Red Sox really need him to be a platoon alternative to their left-handed corner outfielders. Kiké Hernández will move back to center field occasionally, but the Red Sox really need him at shortstop. Raimel Tapia can and will play some center against right-handed pitchers, but he will leave the lineup overwhelmingly left-handed. Same for Triple-A call-up candidate Jarren Duran. — Jennings BACKSTORY The Red Sox lineup lost its most productive bat with the loss of Duvall. His first home run with the team, on April 1, was a walk-off to give the team its first win of the year. Duvall, a one-time All-Star in 2016, came to Boston after a season and a half with Atlanta. His best seasons came in 2016 and 2017 with Cincinnati, when he topped 30 home runs each season. REQUIRED READING * The Red Sox think Adam Duvall can handle center field.
