ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Thomas L. Friedman is an internationally renowned author, reporter, and
columnist-the recipient of three Pulitzer Prizes and the author of six
bestselling books, among them From Beirut to Jerusalem and The World Is Flat.
He was born in Minneapolis in 1953, and grew up in the middle-class Minneapolis
suburb of St. Louis Park. He graduated from Brandeis University in 1975 with a
degree in Mediterranean studies, attended St. Antony's College, Oxford, on a
Marshall Scholarship, and received an M.Phil. degree in modern Middle East
studies from Oxford. After three years with United Press International, he
joined The New York Times, where he has worked ever since as a reporter,
correspondent, bureau chief, and columnist. At the Times, he has won three
Pulitzer Prizes: in 1983 for international reporting (from Lebanon), in 1988 for
international reporting (from Israel), and in 2002 for his columns after the
September 11th attacks.
Friedman's first book, From Beirut to Jerusalem, won the National Book Award in
1989. His second book, The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization
(1999), won the Overseas Press Club Award for best book on foreign policy in
2000. In 2002 FSG published a collection of his Pulitzer Prize-winning columns,
along with a diary he kept after 9/11, as Longitudes and Attitudes: Exploring
the World After September 11. His fourth book, The World Is Flat: A Brief
History of the Twenty-first Century (2005) became a #1 New York Times bestseller
and received the inaugural Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the
Year Award in November 2005. A revised and expanded edition was published in
hardcover in 2006 and in 2007. The World Is Flat has sold more than 4 million
copies in thirty-seven languages.
In 2008 he brought out Hot, Flat, and Crowded, which was published in a revised
edition a year later. His sixth book, That Used to Be Us: How American Fell
Behind in the World We Invented and How We Can Come Back, co-written with
Michael Mandelbaum, was published in 2011.
Thomas L. Friedman lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his family.

I enjoy reading Thomas Friedman because he makes me think. Not just while I am
reading but the forecasts and social parsing that goes on remain in my thoughts
for a long time. The Flat world had a new meaning in the last election and the
populist reaction to globalism. Thank you for waiting was equally as thoughtful
- it brought about lively conversation with friends and will be interesting to
see how this nexus of change will look in a few years.

I've been reading Tom Friedman regularly since he was a reporter for the NYT in
the Middle East, and I have learned a lot from him. Unfortunately, in this book
he starts out with breathtaking reports on advances in computer science and
technology, something I happen to know a bit about (I worked for four decades in
the field), and it's clear that he's in way over his head. There's no reason to
expect a political columnist to be an expert in software or fiber optic systems,
and Mr. Friedman clearly has consulted with folks whom he had reason to believe
are leaders in their professions. But it seems that he didn't really understand
what they were telling him, and his reporting is rife with factual errors that
would not be tolerated if he were writing about, say, the G20. I gave up on P.
71, where he misinterprets an experimental result and gets the speed of light
wrong by a factor of 2/3, and then makes a factually incorrect statement about
how fiber optics works. Now, these are certainly trivial errors, in the sense
that they don't affect his overall thesis, and the vast majority of his readers
will neither notice them, nor care. But that's the problem: Tom Friedman is a
*reporter*--he's supposed to get the facts right. If I see that he is sloppy
with facts in areas in which I know more than he does, how can I trust him to
get them right in the areas in which he knows more than I? I don't read Tom
Friedman for entertainment or distraction (although he is certainly a very fine
writer); I read him to learn, and if I'm not sure that he's getting the facts
right, how do I know that I am, in fact, learning anything? So, I pass on this
book.

Friedman offers a compelling, well-researched paradigm for understanding how the
US arrived at its current level of dysfunctional politics. His hypothesis,
restated throughout the book is that the US, as well as the rest of the planet,
is being subjected to three relentless, ineluctable forces: the exponential
development of technology, the forces of globalization and concomitant
interdependence, and severe climate change, all of which have altered forever
the complacent stability to which we had become accustomed. He argues further
that the pace of change (speed) as well as the rate of change (exponential) are
exceeding in many cases, the capacity of individuals and societies to adapt to
change, while politicians--glued to their own narrow ideologies and even
narrower political bases--provide only simplistic, quixotic and ultimately
futile responses.
Though I could have done without the plethora of folksy interjections, as a
whole the argument made is compelling, well documented and (for me) fairly
frightening. In the closing chapters of the book, Friedman offers several common
sense, pragmatic solutions and manages to convey a sense of optimism that
eventually, the world will be capable of adapting in a manner that improves
global civilization. Given the facts and strong arguments made in preceding
chapters however, the optimism seems unfounded;; particularly given the lack of
political will for the heterodox approach that the author justifiably feels that
circumstances require.
I've given this work five stars because it has helped me, more than any other
source I've read, to develop a reasonably clear understanding of how we got to
where we are. I do not share the author's optimism, but I appreciate the clarity
of thought, the ability to synthesize what appear to be disparate trends, and
finally, the insightful, cogent analyses.

In 2020, everything is moving at the “Speed of Light” and there are no signs of
“it” slowing down.
What is “it”?
Well, “It” about how the planets three largest forces; 1) technology,
2)globalization and 3)climate change are accelerating all at once and
transforming five key realms 1) workplace 2) politics 3) geopolitics 4) ethics
and 5) community and doing it at pace faster than humans can learn and willing
to adapt.
Thomas Friedman writes an excellent thesis and explains very well how so many
levers are being pulled at once and the “cause and effect” that follows.

I have been recommending this book to all my friends. If you want to better
understand what the pace of technological advancement is doing to our society
and lives, you will love this book. Thomas Friedman changed our perception
before with his earlier book, "The World is Flat". This well researched book
gives us hope for the future and allows us to see the potholes in the road along
the way. His conclusion is hopeful and well worth considering. Before you open
your mouth one more time to complain about the loss of the "good old days", get
some perspective on our human dilemma and the potential solutions. It's time
that our politicians and pundits stop solving the wrong problems. It's time to
anticipate new problems and possibilities.

It was published in 2016, but still incredibly relevant and insightful today.
Seriously, this is one of the most important non fiction books written in the
last decade. Similar to Toffler's "Future Shock" for his foresight and analysis
of the changing landscape of the workforce, and society itself, after the
runaway freight train that is technology today. (OK, so he underestimated
Trump's chances at being elected - didn't everyone?) Friedman's story about how
AT&T had to develop software to overcome the limitations of available hardware
in order to keep up with the demand for the additional bandwidth necessitated by
the introduction of Apple's new "iPhone" in 2007 is itself worth the price of
the book.

I loved the audio book, but wanted the book so I could annotate it and hi-lite
bits. But I.less you have young eyes the book is a challenge. The content is
great and suitable for technophiles, if you are a technophobe you might well be
put off. If you are a dot com type then this is a must read, hence needing to
make notes from it. It is very US centric, but they are global players so assume
he is talking about you. However the US has some limitations which won't apply
to you. Personally, this is best consumed via audible when travelling. The
paperback is hard to speed read, some chapters have a bit of waffle in them, tho
make sense later on.

After reading the world is flat i expected this book to capture our new world.
Which was only described in acelerations but 70% of the book was just filled
with rural American nonsense with no relation to the world

computer age, especially the programming and ways this great achievement will
