for Fire Fighters. The company had a surprise design change moving away from
this leather to a different thickness so it was rendered useless to them. The
leather has been stored in a temperature-controlled environment.
Product Note: This Leather Hide has little to no stretch and has a very
rigid / firm temper. Some hide may have tears / small holes on edges.

GOOD STUFF, GREAT VALUE

I purchased a black hide for my various leather projects. Though it's listed as
chrome tanned, it behaves exactly like veg tan with a thick dye coating. The
dyed side is practically waterproof (though scratches without too much
difficulty) the back side is a greyish/almost light blue throughout. The hide I
received is a pretty consistent 5 oz (2mm) with minor variation in thickness.
It's quite stiff when dry as described. With a good soak it becomes quite
floppy. It's slow to dry due to the coating on one side, but seems to hold its
shape very well when it does. I sewed a cover for a water bottle about 3 inches
in diameter and was able to turn the sewn tube inside out (once soaked) without
much trouble along with cinching the ends. A wallet I made has only just
starting to loosen up at the "hinge" after about 3 weeks of daily use. The
natural grain of the leather is also beginning to show through the dye on the
flats of wallet as well so its seems it may patina nicely. As delivered, the
coating is thick enough to make the leather appear fake.
