It is expected to bring fresh snow and unseasonably cold air across Montana, portions of Idaho, and the higher elevations of Washington State. This same system will push eastward and bring winter storm conditions to Wyoming and the Dakotas. Moderate to heavy snowfall will begin today in the high elevations of Northwest Montana. It will eventually spread to the Cascades Range and the rest of Montana by the early morning hours on Wednesday. Peak snowfall will likely occur in central Washington and central Montana, where Winter Storm Warnings are in place for 6 to 12 inches of snow through Thursday. In the higher elevations of Washington and western and central Montana, snow amounts of 8 to 15 inches will be commonplace, with locally higher totals up to 18 to 24 inches possible. These higher amounts are only expected near summits and peaks in southern Montana. Winter Weather Advisories are also found across south-central and northeastern Washington, north-central Oregon, northern Idaho and northern Montana. Gusty winds up to 30 to 40 mph will accompany the snow in the highest of elevations, so be careful when heading out as the combined snow and wind could greatly reduce visibility. As the storm progresses eastward as the work week drags on, it will look to affect portions of Wyoming. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the northwest quadrant of the state, such as Yellowstone National Park, Absaroka Mountains, the Teton and Gros Ventre mountains. Snow is expected to start falling Wednesday morning, and snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches will be possible through Thursday. Winds will be breezy as well, with gusts as high as 45 mph not out of the question. Western Montana into northwest North Dakota is also under a Winter Storm Watch that will be in effect from tonight through Thursday evening. Snow accumulations 6 to 10 inches of snow are possible. Very cold air will also be brought in with this system. Temperatures are likely to dip down into the teens throughout north-central Montana and eventually the entire state from Thursday through early next week. Single-digit overnight low temperatures are possible on Thursday and Friday. It’s never too early to have a supply kit packed in case of inclement weather. A simple kit including a weather radio, water, blankets, batteries, and non-perishable food items will go a long way in the event of a power outage. It’s always best to avoid travel in rough weather as the roads will be dangerous. If you haven't already, now is the time to winterize outdoor equipment and irrigation systems as damage due to extreme cold can occur if not done so. Frostbite and hypothermia will also pose a risk to those unprepared for these chilly temperatures.
