Covid surge in India: Kerala govt makes masks mandatory for elderly, pregnant
women
In view of rising covid cases in India, some states have masks mandatory. India
today logged 5,357 new coronavirus cases, while the active cases rose to 32,814,
according to the Union Health Ministry latest data. 11 deaths were reported in
past 24 hours. While three deaths were reported from Gujarat, two were from
Himachal Pradesh and one each from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha and
Uttar Pradesh besides one reconciled by Kerala. According to the ministry's
website, 220.66 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the
country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Amid a nationwide upward trend in the COVID cases, Union Health Minister
Mandaviya on Friday chaired a review meeting with health ministers of all states
and Union Territories through video conferencing.

Kerala govt makes masks must for pregnant women, elderly
State Health Minister Veena George on Saturday said masks are mandatory for
pregnant women, the elderly and those with lifestyle diseases as it was
important to protect the elderly and bedridden patients from the disease. The
minister, after holding a high-level meeting to evaluate the COVID-19 situation
in the state, said COVID-19-related deaths are mostly reported in people above
60 years and those with lifestyle diseases such as diabetes..

"We have increased the testing. The hospital admission cases are increasing
slightly. However, among the total cases, only 0.8 per cent patients require
oxygen support while 1.2 per cent are admitted in ICUs," the minister said.

The minister asked the people with lifestyle diseases, senior citizens, pregnant
women and children, to wear masks while going out in public. The health
department instructed all the district hospitals to conduct proper COVID-19
evaluation and directed them to increase the facilities according to the surge
plan keeping in mind the increase in coronavirus patients.
The minister also directed the department to ensure oxygen availability and said
a special meeting of private hospitals will be held soon.

Haryana Govt makes wearing face masks mandatory in public places
Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Haryana government made wearing face masks
mandatory in public places, said a bulletin issued by the Haryana Health
Department on Saturday.

The statement said, "It is intimated that in a meeting held under the
chairmanship of Hon'ble Health Minister, Haryana on 03.04.2023, it has been
observed that there is a significant upsurge in the number of COVID cases with
an increased positivity rate of COVID-19 infection in the State of Haryana over
past few weeks."

The statement further added that this was decided as a precautionary measure
against another possible outbreak of COVID-19.

"It has decided that wearing of face mask by the general public at all the
public places, where there is a gathering of more than 100 people, government
offices, malls, etc. is mandatory", reads the statement.

The district administrations and panchayats have been instructed to ensure that
it is implemented in all parts of Haryana. Also, the general public be motivated
to adopt COVID-appropriate behaviour in public places, the statement said.

Puducherry govt makes masks mandatory in public places
Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Puducherry government on Friday issued an
advisory and made face masks mandatory for people in public places. "Wearing
face masks in public places is mandatory in Puducherry," District Collector
E.Vallavan said.

Puducherry Chief Minister Natesan Krishnasamy Rangasamy, while taking part in
the Covid-19 review meeting held by Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya
on Friday, said the spread of Covid-19 in Puducherry is under control.

"The spread of corona in Puducherry is under control and the government has
taken appropriate measures to prevent its spread," he said in the Puducherry
Legislative Assembly while attending the Covid-19 review meeting through video
conferencing.
