NANOBIOPHYSICS LAB

Welcome to the NanoBiophysics (nBIO) lab at UCLouvain, where we explore
fundamental biological mechanisms through cutting-edge biophysical approaches.
Bringing together the expertise of three research groups led by David Alsteens,
Yves Dufrêne, and Andra Dumitru, our lab focuses on diverse topics in
microbiology, virology, mechanobiology, and immunology. Using advanced tools
such as atomic force microscopy, optical microscopy, and biosensing techniques,
we aim to uncover the intricate interplay between biological structures and
their functions at the nanoscale.




HOW WE WORK




UCL

The Catholic University of Louvain, abbreviated UCL then UCLouvain since
September 2018, is a multi-site French-speaking Belgian university with 19
faculties established in six Belgian cities.


FNRS-FRS

The Scientific Research Fund is a funding agency of the Wallonia-Brussels
Federation of Belgium, whose mission is to develop fundamental scientific
research.

Congratulations to Irem Demir for Her L’Oréal-Unesco For Women in Science Award

We are delighted to congratulate Irem Demir, a member of our nBIO research
group, for being honored as one of six exceptional Belgian scientists at the
ninth edition of the L’Oréal-Unesco For Women in Science Awards. This
prestigious program celebrates outstanding women in life sciences and STEM,
recognizing their remarkable contributions to research and innovation.

Since its inception in 1998, the For Women in Science program has recognized
over 250 women scientists across 110 countries, inspiring future generations and
promoting greater gender equity in science.

Irem’s achievement is a proud moment for our team, and we are excited to see the
impact of her continued contributions to science. Congratulations, Irem!

Congrats to Melanie, Andra and Jinsung for the brilliant study published in
Nature Communications about reovirus binding to cell surfaces. AFM combined with
confocal microscopy revealed how sialic acid binding triggers changes.

Welcome to Dr. Danahe Mohammed from Harvard University and Rita Natividade from
University of Minho. Danahe will work on reovirus binding to cells, and Rita
