river. Treking simply a portion of this trail from the north is worthwhile, even
without reaching Douthat.


The northern gain access to starts at the Walton System. There is area for lots
of cars here, and no one else was parked here when we were here. From the
parking loop, head down an old roadway past a closed gate, going west. The
emphasize of this part of trail is the bridge over the Cowpasture River, which
is right at the beginning of the path.


This area of trail is actually the Beards Mountain Spur Trail (# 459A). The blue
blazed trail crosses the bridge and begins heading northeast - the opposite
direction of Douthat - before striking a ridge and rotating southwest. After
ascending along the sides of steep slopes, the Beards Mtn Spur Trail ends at the
Beards Mtn Trail.

8 miles to the Walton System, however my GPS checked out 2. 0 miles. Pass a
point with great views to the northwest. The path ascends through a fairly open
area which is most likely thick throughout the summer. I Found This Interesting
from the top look east towards Rough Mountain. This is an excellent place to
soak in the views and the privacy.

This trail descends west to a Forest Service road and is described in
information later in this post. Ascend to the top of an unnamed peak and take
pleasure in views to the northwest, towards Warm Springs Mountain. Leave the
George Washington National Forest and enter into Douthat State Park. The border
is marked by a foot high concrete post and multiple yellow boundary marker
indications on trees.


The Beards Mtn Trail ends at a crossway with Douthat's Mountain Top Trail. This
intersection is not kept in mind by a trail sign, so it would be more difficult
to understand where to go if you approached initially from Douthat's tracks,
instead of approaching on the Beards Mtn Trail. I had actually treked the
Mountain Top Path before, and always presumed that Beards Mtn Path converged
more south, where there is another concrete post and a sign specifying that the
trail has actually reached the border of the GWNF.
