Book Review

Klara and the Sun
by Kazuo Ishiguro

In his eighth novel, Ishiguro discusses existential themes with a story set in
the future United States. The area is riven by political loyalists and fascist
political movements, and technology has rendered many residents post-employed.
As a result, a blunt caste system places those more deserving at the top in the
"lifted" category.

The reader is introduced to Klara, who is an "Artificial Friend" and is on
display at a storefront window. Some of these Artificial Friends are designated
as companions for children since they don't get out much in this new world.

One day a teenage girl named Josie enters the store with her mother. The reader
learns that Josie is suffering from a mysterious illness. While at the store,
Josie chooses Klara to be her best friend and takes her home.

The book encounters some heavier topics such as loneliness and vulnerability.
Klara's voice is devoted and pure, with one reviewer describing it almost like a
service dog. Klara struggles with learning how to love and deal with the limited
human understanding of almost everything. Upon completion of the book, you might
find yourself thinking about your own life, mortality, and the saving grace of
it all: love.
