JAPANESE SOCIETY FOR BIOMATERIALS * Home * From President * Meetings and Events * Publications * Links * Membership * Japanese MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT 1. Home 2. From President WELCOME TO JSB As the current president of the Japanese Society for Biomaterials (JSB), I am honored to address all of you. JSB is a leading society in the field of biomaterials research and engineering globally. I assumed the presidency in April 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the cancellation of worldwide scientific conferences, the quick development of online meeting systems enabled council members to engage more frequently with young and dynamic JSB members, regardless of their location. I am proud to say that we have successfully established long-lasting new Society organizations and initiatives to revitalize biomaterials research. With the end of the pandemic-induced crisis in sight, 2023 promises to be a year of achievements and rewards for JSB. In 1987, Dr. William defined a biomaterial as ‘a nonviable material used in a medical device, intended to interact with biological systems.’ Although metals, ceramics, and polymeric materials used in medical devices were the primary focus, bio-derived substances such as collagen and polysaccharides were also included. Since then, there has been a remarkable advancement in the field of drug delivery systems, aimed at improving the administration of drugs. More recently, new field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine has emerged and living cells and tissues have been added to the scope, resulting in a vast interdisciplinary field. JSB currently comprises of approximately 1,400 active researchers from various fields such as engineering, medicine, dentists, pharmaceutics, and regulatory science. These researchers are actively involved in various aspects of the field, including basic science, research and development in companies, preclinical research, and clinical research. The ultimate mission of JSB is to bring pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and regenerative medicine products to the world through the collaboration of these highly skilled professionals. JSB holds an annual academic conference with approximately 900 participants. The next annual meeting will be held in Osaka in November 2023. In addition, JSB is also participating in the 9th Asian Biomaterials Congress from August 28 to 30, 2023 in Penang Island, Malaysia, in which biomaterial societies from Asian countries gathers every other year. In 2024, we have 12th World Biomaterials Conference (WBC2024) at Daegu, Korea, with expected participation of over 4,000 researchers worldwide. In addition to these conferences, regional meetings focusing on specific themes are held in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokushin-etsu, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai, Chugoku-Shikoku, and Kyushu. JSB publishes the Japanese Journal three times a year and its official English Journal is "Journal of Biomedical Materials Research A/B (Wiley)". JSB is dedicated to offering numerous opportunities for members to network and share their ideas. Additionally, we aim to make the results of your research accessible to society by collaborating with industries. I hope JSB will make great success by cooperating with all of you. Thank you very much.
