The Virginia State Lottery dates all the way back to 1988, when it was launched
to accumulate funds for various special state programs. In 1999, the Lottery
started directing all the profit to K-12 public schools, which amounts to $1.6
million per day on average and approximately half a billion dollars per year.
For instance, in the fiscal year 2020, K-12 public schools received around $595
million from the VA Lottery.


VIRGINIA LOTTERY RULES

Playing lottery games in Virginia is a fun and exciting activity. Still, if you
go for it, you’ll have to follow certain rules. Here are some of the most
important ones:

 * You must be at least 18 years old to purchase lottery tickets in Virginia.
 * If you’re buying tickets online, you must be physically located within the
   state’s borders.
 * The minimum deposit for online ticket purchases is $10.
 * You have 180 days to claim your prize. 
 * The name on your ID must match the one on your Social Security card so you
   can claim winnings greater than $600.

CAN I BUY VA TICKETS ONLINE?

Yes, you can buy VA Lottery tickets online, provided that you’re physically
present in the state. However, not all Lottery games are eligible. You’re only
able to buy online tickets for Powerball, Mega Millions, and Cash4Life.

The procedure is very simple:

 * Visit the VA Lottery website and hit the Register button.
 * Provide the required information, including the last four digits of your
   Social Security number.
 * After logging in, click on the Deposit button on the My Account screen, and
   add the desired payment method. Fill in the deposit amount of at least $10,
   and confirm the transaction.
 * Go to the Main Menu and click on the PLAY NOW button, which will take you
   directly to the game page.

VIRGINIA LOTTERY GAMES AND DRAWING SCHEDULES


POWERBALL

Powerball is one of the most popular US draw lottery games with a progressive
jackpot that grows until someone matches five white balls and one red Powerball.
The game offers nine ways to win, and thanks to the additional Power Play
option, non-jackpot prizes can go up 10 times. The drawings take place every
Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 11 p.m.


MEGA MILLIONS

Mega Millions got its name due to the size of its jackpot prizes. While playing
Mega Millions, if you guess the winning five white balls and one gold Mega Ball,
you’ll be in line for many millions of dollars. Also, the non-jackpot prizes can
get a 5x increase if you purchase the Megaplier option. The draw is held every
Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m.


KENO

To play Keno, you’ll need to select a number of spots ranging from one to ten
and then pick the respective number of balls between 1 and 80. Your bet per draw
can be worth from $1 to $10, and the maximum number of consecutive draws you can
play is 20. If you can’t think of any lucky numbers, the Quick Pick option can
choose them for you. The draw takes place every four minutes.


BANK A MILLION

Bank a Million drawings happen every Wednesday and Saturday at 11:00 p.m. To
take part in Bank a Million, you need to pick six numbers from 1 to 40 or use
Easy Pick for random numbers. The ticket costs $2, and there’s also a Bonus Ball
that can add more money to your prize if you have it on your slip.


CASH4LIFE

Cash4Life is a game that requires you to pick five numbers from 1 to 60, and one
Cash Ball from 1 to 4. You can play this game every day, and the draw is
scheduled for 9 p.m. There are seven ways to win, and tickets are available for
online purchase.


CASH 5

Cash 5 comes with a starting jackpot worth $100,000. It has a feature called EZ
Match, which enables players to instantly win up to $500 aside from the draw. If
you want to participate in the Cash 5 draw, you can select five numbers between
1 and 41 for $1. Should you decide to spend one dollar more, you will get a
chance to pick an EZ Match number for the instant cash prize.


PICK 4

Virginia Lottery Pick 4 is a daily draw game you can play for $1 or 50¢. Choose
a four-digit combination that can be anything between 0000 and 9999, pick one of
the numerous play types, and follow the respective draw, of which there are two
daily.


PICK 3

If you only have three lucky numbers, use them to play Pick 3 and win great
prizes for either $1 or 50¢. Each of the numbers can range between 0 and 9, and
the draws take place twice a day. You can check Pick 3 results twice a day.


RAFFLE

At the end of the year, you can try your luck and play a lottery game that only
takes place once every 365 days. Raffle tickets can be purchased during the last
two calendar months, and on January 1, four players will receive a $1 million
prize. Six others will get a New Year’s gift worth $100,000, while 500 players
will get $500 each.

HOW TO CLAIM A LOTTERY PRIZE IN VIRGINIA

Players have 180 days to claim a prize won through the Virginia Lottery, and the
winning ticket should be signed at the back. If you have a printed payslip, you
can cash it in several different ways depending on the prize amount.

 * For a prize worth $600 or less, you can get your cash at any Virginia Lottery
   retail shop, a Virginia Lottery customer service center, any of the prize
   zones, or by mail.
 * To cash out prizes bigger than $600, you can visit a Virginia Lottery
   customer service center or a prize zone, or you can receive it through the
   mail. You’ll need to present a filled-out claim form, a valid ID, and your
   Social Security card.

Aside from the signed ticket, you need to send copies of the requested
documents. Make sure that you’ve made a copy of the winning ticket for yourself.

If you’ve played online and won, prizes below $100 will be added to your lottery
