AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER Teaching swimming to a child with autism can take considerable time, especially if the child has an aversion to water. The initial step is observation and evaluation, followed by a plan of action. The plan should be broken down into small, achievable steps. Each child is different so it is critical to create a system specific to the child you are working with DISABILTY Disability is no excuse, but shows you that you have the ability to everything more and even better. FAQ Is it difficult for kids to learn to swim? The main struggle is fear of the water. It really depends on what age the parent brings the child to the pool; the younger they are, the easier it is to work with them. They haven't developed the fear of the water yet. Others have developed fear; maybe something occurred, or they are just afraid to let go of their parents and be with a stranger. But ultimately, it's important to understand that while it might take longer for one kid to learn than another, they all will eventually get used to it and will learn to swim. We combine the latest teaching techniques and every drop of fun out of every day. Our class routines are designed to keep the swimmers moving in specific patterns that accentuate hand technique and hands-on correction from the instructor. This turns your little tykes into ace swimmers and instills a lifelong love of the water. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING KIDS WATER SAFE? ONE BIG CHALLENGE WE SEE — AND IT'S SAD TO SEE — IS WHEN A PARENT BRINGS A 4-YEAR-OLD, LET'S SAY, AND THE KID IS CRYING HYSTERICALLY FOR TWO OR THREE LESSONS. THE PARENT PULLS THE KID OUT, SAYING, "I DON'T WANT TO TRAUMATIZE MY CHILD." IT'S A PARENT QUITTING ON THE CHILD. ULTIMATELY THAT CHILD WILL GET COMFORTABLE IN THE WATER AND WILL LEARN TO SWIM. YOU JUST SHOULDN'T GIVE UP TOO SOON. WE ALSO THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT LEARNING HOW TO BE WATER SAFE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FUN. THERE ARE ESSENTIALS, AND YOU HAVE TO TEACH THEM. THE CHILD MIGHT BE CRYING ABOUT LEARNING THOSE ESSENTIALS, BUT THEY'RE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING WATER SAFE AND NOT BEING WATER SAFE. ONCE THOSE ARE IN PLACE, THE CHILD BEGINS TO HAVE FUN. What Should I Do If My Child Cry? Parents are the choreographers of their children’s emotional state. You should present a positive welcoming and happy outward demeanor when you are describing swimming and swim lessons. Tell your child how much fun they are going to have at the pool. Remind them about the fun things that you did together at the pool when you went swimming before the lessons. Your goal should be to boost their confidence and load them with positivity and excitement for the coming lesson where they will learn new and wonderful things in the water. Do your best to lace your language with positive words and actions. Give hugs, kisses, encouragement, and present a reassuring confident body language to convey confidence and certainty to your child. 3. What Is Beach & Water Safety? That's why we'll focus on water recreation for this lesson a bit more so than other activities. The most common causes for not-so-happy endings with water recreation have to do with * An inability to swim.Alcohol use. Using alcohol impairs your ability to judge danger appropriately, avoid tipping over into a pool, and swim properly. Actually, alcohol use is involved in about 70% of all water recreation related deaths. * Other causes include a failure to wear a life jacket. 88% of people who die in a boating accident aren't wearing a life jacket. * Children are more likely to drown if there isn't a good barrier next to a pool or if they're not closely supervised. * Unintentional drowning is a big risk for people with seizure disorders. When someone has a seizure, they cannot control their motions and are very vulnerable. To help prevent a drowning, there are many words of wisdom that can be followed by everyone: * Take swimming classes and teach your children how to swim. * Use life jackets when on any boat, be it a canoe, kayak, or motor boat. * Learn CPR to save the life of a friend. * Supervise children around water, and closely watch your friends if they have a seizure disorder. * Never swim alone. Make sure someone is always with you. You may get hurt, but your buddy can either save you or get help for you. * Don't drink alcohol before you swim. * Install fencing around a pool. * Do not hold your breath under water for a long period of time. You may pass out and drown without ever feeling the need to gasp for air. * Do not fight a rip current. You cannot possibly win against the force of Mother Nature. Conserve your energy and swim parallel to shore. Swim towards shore once you are free of the current. * Also, watch the weather. Do not swim, boat, or engage in any other water activity when there's bad or stormy weather. * Obey lifeguards and all warning signs at the beach. They're there to save you from trouble, be it dangerous waves or sharks. Copyright © 2022. Designed by Faiz Lagardien. TOP
