SONA GYULKHASYAN & RAFAEL PETROSSIAN

JAZZ CONNECTION

This project called "Jazz Connection" because our goal is to play and cooperate
with different artists around the world and connect with people through jazz
music. 

Sona Gulkhasyan
Jazz vocalist, pianist, composer.
She was born in 1999 in Yerevan. From the age of 4, she studied vocals in the
vocal studio "Do-re-Mi" under the guidance of Nadezhda Sarkisyan. From the age
of 7, she studied at the muz. school. She attended piano classes at the A.
Spendiaryan School. In 2014, she entered the Tchaikovsky Secondary Music School,
studied to become a musicologist-theorist.

She is a laureate and prize-winner of many international vocal competitions,
including:

In 2011, she participated in the Berliner Perle competition in Berlin and won
the Grand Prix.

In 2012, she took 2nd place at the children's "New Wave" in Yalta.

Since the age of 15, she has been the vocalist of various popular rock and pop
groups in Armenia. In 2018-2022, she took a break from music in connection with
her studies and received two higher educations - a linguist and a lawyer. In
2022, having met the pianist Rafael Petrosyan, she began to actively engage in
musical activities again. Having found a common language in music, they founded
the label "Sheet Happens" together and their orchestra, which is now in an
active phase. Sona writes music, hones her piano playing skills and actively
performs on various stages of the country. She performed at the ARARAT jazz
picnic "Happy Sing" festival in Almaty as a specially invited artist. In
November 2023 and March 2024, he toured the Russian Federation. She performed in
Tolyatti with a local big band at the Philharmonic. She performed a concert
program in such clubs as Jazz Club Esse, EverJazz, The Hat. The tour of Russia
covered such cities as Moscow, Rostov, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Ulyanovsk,
Tolyatti, Novorossiysk, Armavir.

Rafael Petrossian
Jazz pianist, arranger, composer.
He was born in 1992 in Yerevan. Raphael was a student at the Faculty of General
Medicine of Yerevan State Medical University, however, at the age of 22, having
discovered jazz music, he left his studies incomplete, in the complete absence
of any musical education, self-educated, then receiving knowledge from Vahagn
Hayrapetyan, Karen Grigoryan and Armen Tutunjian, began actively studying music
as a jazz pianist. Raphael performs with his trio and quartet, and is a pianist
in the bands Arm.Strong Dixie and Arm.Strong Orchestra. Raphael also performs
with jazz vocalist Sona Gulhasyan, with whom they founded the label "Sheet
Happens" and their own jazz orchestra, which is currently actively engaged in
creative activities. In 2021, he participated in the World of Jazz international
competition, performed a concert program with various musicians from abroad.
Among them, trumpeter and vocalist Larry Gillespie, Trumpeter John Marshall,
Double Bassist Nikolai Zatolochny, Together with Levon Malkhasyan, is the
co-author of the Anthology of Armenian Jazz. He performed at the ARARAT jazz
picnic festival "Happy Sing" in Almaty as a specially invited artist, where he
also performed at the EverJazz jazz club. In November 2023 and March 2024, he
toured the Russian Federation. He performed in Tolyatti with a local Big Band at
the Philharmonic Hall. He performed a concert program in such clubs as Jazz Club
Esse, EverJazz, The Hat. The tour of Russia covered such cities as Moscow,
Rostov, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Ulyanovsk, Tolyatti, Novorossiysk, Armavir.

PROJECT DETAILS



We are making music and expressing ourselves through jazz music. We play jazz
standards, original songs and our arrangements of great Armenian Composers. We
participated in many festivals, performed in many concert halls and jazz clubs.
At the moment we are working on our first album under “Alpha Sound” label, which
is coming very soon.
