The upcoming recession is on the minds of a lot of people, but likely not that
of the future buyer of this rare 1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL1, which may be on
track to break auction records when it hits the block in a few weeks. The
C3-generation ZL1 is one of two built, which gives it actually rare “I know what
I have” status, and in December, Ontario-based RM Sotheby’s announced it’ll be
auctioning the car off at its Phoenix, Arizona sale, in January.

As one of the rarest Corvettes ever produced, there’s a strong chance it’ll
become the most expensive Corvette ever sold at auction, with a sale price
expected to crack US$3 million – if anyone buys it – says a recent Hagerty
article.



What’s the big deal about a ZL1 Corvette? Well, Chevy’s famous L88-code
427-cubic-inch big-block engine arrived the last year the Leafs won the Stanley
Cup, in 1967. That mill was something special, a flat-out racing engine that
could be ordered straight from your local Chevy dealer, if you knew how to ask
for it. L88s were very high-compression V-8s with an aggressive cam setup that
let them boast an impressive 430 rated horsepower — rumour has it that as a
matter of fact, they cracked 500 horses.

Those big-block Chevys were quite heavy chunks of iron, though, and so to reduce
weight and increase performance, the ZL1 code engine was developed, essentially
an aluminum-block L88. Financially, buyers had to pony up nearly $1,000 on top
of a Corvette’s base price of about $4,000 to get an L88, a substantial
increase. If you wanted the ZL1, however, you’d have to tack on over $4,700 to
the price — yes, over double the cost of the Corvette itself. That big up-front
cost led only two Corvette owners opting for it in ’69.



This is the first time since 1991 that a Corvette ZL1 has seen the public
auction block, and this particular ZL1 has never been offered for public sale.
It last changed owners in 2007, when the current owner bought it from the
original owner. It was restored by Kevin Mackay in 2014, and was certified
Bloomington Gold as the first of the two ZL1s produced.



The RM Sotheby’s listing includes a pre-sale estimate of US$2,600,000 to
US$3,000,000, which if it happens would put the car in the category of the top
three Corvettes ever sold at auction. However, the actual final price is
anything but certain. Currently, the all-time record price for a Corvette sold
at auction is $3.85 million, for a 1967 L88 Coupe that traded hands in 2014.
