Skip to content HEY CIDER QUEERS AND ALLIES! Building advocacy and allyship in this space over the last decade has been a challenge, especially because we work in outside industries to support our volunteer efforts within cider, and our time has been stretched very thin the last quarter with personal obstacles and external factors. We’re a very small team. Like many people and organizations out there trying to survive, we’ve been burning the candle at both ends. Unlike other advocacy orgs in this space, we don’t yet have donorship or a base of readily-available talent to give their free time for writing, promotion, and partnerships to further the work (if you’re interested, DM US!) We’ve had huge efforts from leadership and cideries, including the ACA @pickcider, and even more have stepped up for Pride and our community this year than ever before. But we have largely been isolated from the media and exposure given to other orgs in beverage that would bring sponsors and partnerships. Part of that falls on us – as it goes: make yourself heard – but part of it is the gatekeeping nature of performative and competitive allyship and advocacy. At the end of the day, it’s all a business we are all attempting to ferment humanity and accountability into. But the work to make cider inclusive and supportive doesn’t stop, even if we do, and we are grateful for our cishet allies and lgbtqia+ community that have stepped up to fill in with the important work of visibility and safe spaces. The parade must go on. Considering the fiascos at recent industry conferences, we consider ourselves lucky to have an association and industry that has pushed back where others have fell short and led when others have turned a blind eye. With all this in mind, we are refocusing on opportunities and objectives that are attainable and compliment the work being done by cider makers and other lgbtqia+ industry organizations. We have three goals: fundraising, visibility, and support. So we’re taking our most popular work that seems to have resonated with ciderkin – our ‘Queer Is Here’ bottle – and are utilizing it as a base of action and awareness. We’re reformatting our online site to a storefront, and donating all proceeds to supporting less visible queer writers, makers and organizations, and to fund an outside educational scholarship for the standouts that continue to grow and shape the industry. Thank you for being patient. This work is a challenge, but that’s always been a draw for us. Happy Pride month!
