FIRE RESISTANCE DESIGN OF RC STRUCTURES

21st May 2024 - 13:30-17:30 BST

Summary

Date & Time

21st May 2024 - 13:30-17:30 BST

Available on Demand?

Until 28th May 2024

Location

Online

Price

£140+VAT

This webinar will describe the effects of fire on concrete structures and cover
the methods that can be used for analyzing and designing concrete structures for
adequate performance in fire. The webinar will cover the following topics:

1. Principles of fire design of structures:
Design objectives; fire resistance concept; prescriptive versus
performance-based design approach; design fires; heat transfer and structural
response.

2. Effects of fire on concrete structures:
Material behavior; structural behavior; examples of fire-induced failures.

3. Fire design of concrete structural elements to code:
Eurocode 2 Part 1.2, ACI 216.

4. Performance-based fire design of concrete structures:
Procedure; quantification of the performance of concrete structures in fire;
examples of numerical modeling.

5. Resistance to full burnout and post-fire assessment.

PREVIEW COURSE SLIDES

PRESENTERS

Thomas Gernay is an Assistant Professor in Civil and Systems Engineering at
Johns Hopkins University. He has more than 10 years of experience of research
and teaching of fire behavior of structures. He obtained his PhD from University
of Liege in 2012, with a thesis on the modeling of concrete structures in fire.
Before joining JHU, he worked as a Fulbright Scholar at Princeton University. He
is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Engineering
Institute (ASCE/SEI) Technical Committee on Fire Protection, the International
Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) Subcommittee on Research, and the
American Concrete Institute (ACI) Fire Resistance and Fire Protection Committee.
He is also active within the International Federation for Structural Concrete
(fib), where he leads the Task Group on Performance-Based Fire Design. He has
worked extensively on the numerical modeling of structures in fire and
co-develops the software SAFIR® which is used by numerous researchers and
engineers worldwide. His research has been recognized by several awards
including from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the
International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS), and the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA). He is an associate editor of Springer journal
Fire Technology. He is the lead author of the chapters on “Concrete Structures”
and on “Advanced Analysis” in the Springer publication “International Handbook
of Structural Fire Engineering”, and he has published more than 130 research
papers and conference articles on the subject.

TESTIMONIALS

VERY WELL PRESENTED WITH HELPFUL EXAMPLES AND GRAPHICS TO ILLUSTRATE CONCEPTS.

EXCELLENT PRESENTATION AND LECTURER.

REALLY HELPED GIVE ME A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS OF FIRE AND HEAT ON
STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS.
