GS PAY SCALE 2023 : NEW UPDATE

2023 GS Pay Scale – The General Schedule (GS) pay scales vary between the GS-1
and GS-15 grades. For example, at the GS-10 step, the average pay is $152,771
per annum. This is an increase of 4% from the current GS-15 pay scale. 2023 GS
Pay Tables The $183,500 pay cap for higher GS grades in 2023 will be as per the
rate for Level IV of the Executive Schedule. This is an increase of 4.08% over
the 2022 limit, which was $176,300.




GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) BASE PAY VARIES FROM THE GS-1 LEVEL TO $152,771 PER ANNUM
AT STEP 10 OF THE GS-15 GRADE.

The General Schedule (GS) is the pay scale used by more than seventy percent of
federal civilian employees. It includes professional, administrative, and
technical positions. There are 15 grades. Each grade is separated into ten
steps. Every step adds $1,570 to an annual salary.

GS salaries are adjusted for locality pay. An employee’s location determines the
locality pay adjustment percentage. For example, an individual working in the
San Francisco-Oakland area may receive a step one salary of $67,226.

In general, the GS has 15 grades. A job is assigned to a specific rate based on
its requirements and qualifications. Typically, a position is set to a GS grade
if it meets the minimum education and experience requirements. An employee may
also advance in a GS grade by promotions at designated intervals.



GS employees will receive a 2.2% federal pay increase in 2022. This is the most
significant increase in two decades. GS base pay tables are usually adjusted in
January. These tables reflect inflation.

New GS employees are typically hired at the first step of their GS grade.
However, agencies may assign new Federal employees at a higher step rate. This
may be based on the superior qualifications of a prospective employee or special
needs within the agency.

The Office of Personnel Management administers the General Schedule. GS policies
are approved through legislation or Executive Order. In addition, OPM publishes
official pay tables in December.


LOCALITY PAY ADJUSTMENT

Federal employees will receive a 1.1% locality pay adjustment on the 2023 GS pay
scale. This adjustment is based on data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
For example, the GS-9 step-1 pay is $67,226 in the San Francisco-Oakland area.

Locality pay is an adjustment based on the cost of living in a geographic area.
It is a way to make the General Schedule more sensitive to local labor markets.
Locality pay is calculated as a percentage of the average income in the
locality. A higher amount is given to workers in more expensive areas.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) publishes a chart of locality pay
rates. These rates vary by region, city, and county. There are 47 different
locality pay areas, each representing a geographic area of the United States or
its territories. Each room is subject to changes determined by Congress and the
White House.
