MORE INFORMATION ON REDEVELOPING OLDER HIGH-RISE

What is the high-rise redevelopment?

This is Australia’s largest urban renewal project with a pipeline of projects
between now and 2051. It will transform Melbourne’s social housing
neighbourhoods, replacing 44 ageing high-rises and other buildings with modern,
accessible and energy efficient homes and improved community facilities.

Once completed, there will be at least 10% more social housing for Victorians
who need it and more homes close to schools, services, transport and jobs.

What does this mean for renters in social housing high-rise neighbourhoods?

This is a long-term project that will happen in careful stages. When it’s time
to move, renters are given plenty of notice and support to find a suitable new
home including homes in their current neighbourhood.

When new homes are built renters have the right to return to their neighbourhood
based on their ongoing eligibility, needs and suitability of the new homes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY ARE OLDER HIGH-RISES AND OTHER BUILDINGS BEING REDEVELOPED?

Redeveloping the old high-rises means current renters will have homes that meet
modern standards.  We can also deliver more homes for Victorians who need them
close to services, transport and jobs.

WHY NOT FIX THE HOUSING WE ALREADY HAVE?

The ageing high-rises no longer meet many minimum design standards and their
design prevents changing their structure to meet those standards.

In recent years building breakdowns (especially electrical, plumbing, lifts and
sewerage) have become more common causing a lot of disruption to renters. This
includes not being able to use lifts and having to relocate for long periods.

WHEN DO RENTERS HAVE TO MOVE?

The high-rise redevelopment is a long-term project that will happen in careful
stages. You can use our postcode search to see if your location has started
redevelopment or is still in planning.

Five sites have been announced for redevelopment and renters at these locations
are being supported to relocate.

No further relocations are planned to start before July 2026 and we’ll be in
touch to give renters lots of notice and help when new locations are ready to
start.

HOW DOES THE RELOCATIONS PROCESS WORK?

Our relocations team work with each household to understand their needs and
preferences so we can match renters to a suitable new home. This includes
important things, like:

 * accessibility requirements
 * health services and providers
 * schools, childcare and education
 * social and community networks
 * transport links and connections.

Renters will have a chance to inspect the property before you accept an offer of
an alternative home.

Once an offer is accepted, we help you choose a moving day and organise the
move.
