He is making calls and assembling a > team. He will have more to announce in weeks to come. Not only will he be the > nominee of the the Republican Party, but will defeat the out-of-step, liberal > Senator Bill Nelson," Mack adviser David James told POLITICO on Wednesday > night. When asked why the congressman changed his mind, James would only say that he wanted someone to emerge who could defeat Nelson and that "did not happen." He said Mack would address his change of heart more specifically in the coming weeks. Senator Nelson Nelson has been raising money at a fairly formidable clip, raising about $2 million in the last quarter that ended last month. Mack reportedly has about $300,000 in campaign money, not a bad place to start. The current candidates for the race are former U.S. Senator George LeMieux, former Florida House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, Retired Army Colonel Mike McCallister and former Ruth's Chris steakhouse chief Craig Miller. Of the four, McCallister has the big surprise so far, as all of the candidates seemingly are attempting to becoming the acceptable Tea Party favorite, as that wing of the party has become the vocal and intense during this primary season. Because of his lack of a paper trail (he never ran for office until he came in third in last year's GOP race for Governor with a surprising 10 percent of the vote), McCallister could be construed as the Herman Cain of this Senate race - an outsider with a tough conservative message to an electorate looking for something different. But reporting by the Miami Herald's Mark Caputo regarding McCallister's boasting about his military record seemed to have made his bid that much harder. The early favorite in the race appeared to be Senate President Mike Haridopolos. But he was hammered on the campaign trail about some issues about his record (including this contentious appearance at a Tiger Bay meeting in Tampa this summer), and dropped out in August, saying that he couldn't be an effective leader in the Legislature and run for office concurrently. Mack brings a bit of celebrity to the party - he's married to Mary Bono, the wife of the late Sonny Bono, and his father, also named Connie Mack, was elected twice to the U.S. Senate here in Florida. Just as George W. Bush had a tremendous head start when he ran for president based on how people confused him with his dad, Mack definitely benefits from his name as well. But there is one issue in which not only is Mack vulnerable, but, depending on the mood of the GOP mindset, could be toxic, and that is his stance on illegal immigration. In an infamous op-ed he penned for the Washington Post in May of 2010, Mack called on his fellow Republicans to reject the Arizona anti immigration measure, SB 1070 (which is less harsh than a more recent bill passed in Alabama on undocumented immigrants). A few weeks before he wrote that opinion piece, he called the bill comparable to "the Gestapo." This law of 'frontier justice' — where law enforcement officials are required to stop anyone based on 'reasonable suspicion' that they may be in the country illegally — is reminiscent of a time during World War II when the Gestapo in Germany stopped people on the street and asked for their papers without probable cause," Mack said in a statement. "This is not the America I grew up in and believe in, and it’s not the America I want my children to grow up in," he added. One of Mack's opponents, George LeMieux, in a press release, called Mack "a friend," which in politics means he was about to stick the shiv into him: > “While Congressman Mack has done some good things in Washington, he will have > to explain to Floridians why he voted to raise his own pay several times, why > he joined Bill Nelson in voting for a Highway Bill that contained 6,376 > earmarks, including the infamous Bridge to Nowhere, and why he specifically > rejected efforts to eliminate wasteful earmarks like an aquarium in > Connecticut and tourism funding in Kentucky. Florida Republicans are in for a > really good debate as we choose our nominee against Bill Nelson." "Really good debate?" We can only hope so. * * Connie Mack It's been the perception among some Florida political analysts that the four major candidates vying for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate next year have not exactly distinguished themselves, and if the election were next week instead of next year, Bill Nelson would probably be re-elected. Apparently, Connie Mack IV has been having some of those same thoughts. The Fort Myers area Congressman announced months ago when the race was still forming that he wouldn't be candidate. But that changed Wednesday night, when allies to the Republican informed the media that he would in fact, be getting into the race. Does it make him the favorite? Not necessarily, but a Sachs/Mason-Dixon poll released in February showed that with the exception of Jeb Bush (who is obviously not a candidate), Mack polled best next to Senator Nelson, trailing him 45-40.
