Three people have been shot dead and two others hospitalized after a mass
shooting on the streets of Washington DC.

Police were called at around 8pm to the southeastern suburb of Anacostia, where
the victims were located.

Two men and a woman died at the scene, while two other men were taken to
hospital - one in a life-threatening condition.

Investigators say the crime scene stretches several blocks and believe there are
other victims, who are urged to come forward.

The initial call led officers to the 1600 block of Good Hope Road SE - located
just five miles and a 15-minute drive from the White House.






"This kind of gun violence is not acceptable in the District of Columbia. This
is not a war zone. We want our residents to feel safe," Pamela Smith,
Metropolitan Police Department acting chief, said at a late-night briefing.

"We realize that there may be others who may have been injured tonight. We are
asking you to come forward.

"It can't rest upon the Metropolitan Police Department to determine what works
and what doesn't work."

Washington experienced another mass shooting last month when nine people were
wounded while celebrating Independence Day in a neighborhood around a 20-minute
drive east of the White House.




It is the second mass shooting recorded in America on August 5. In Lafayette,
Louisiana, a child has been killed while a woman and another child are in a
critical condition. Two police officers were also wounded in the violent
incident.

In 2023 so far, 436 mass shootings have occurred across the US, according to the
Gun Violence Archives.

Acting police chief Smith also told reporters: "Let me be clear: this gun
violence has to stop.

"It is incredibly frustrating. We know that somebody in the community knows what
is happening. Please reach out and provide us with any information that we can
in order to ensure that our citizens, our residents are safe in their
communities."
