Home About City Guides Restaurants Travel Products Tips Recipes Lifestyle Instagram Contact A vegan eating out guide Oct 24 OCT 24 WHERE TO GET VEGAN AFTERNOON TEA IN NYC Crystal Pang dessert, guide, tea, Special Occasion Blank Slate Tea I’ve been obsessed with afternoon tea ever since I was in London where I learned about those little finger sandwiches & dined in Paris’s Shangri-La which serves a fully vegan afternoon tea. New York’s afternoon tea scene is limited, but I found and wanted to share the 3 vegan-friendly afternoon tea shots where you can feel fancy, eat sweets, and stick your pinky up! But wait, what’s afternoon tea? According to Little Choc, one of my fave places to eat crepes (and featured on this list), this is what afternoon tea is: to bridge the gap between breakfast and late dinner, the upper classes of 19th century England gathered to drink tea and nibble on snacks in the afternoon. This ritual became so popular that it continues to this day, involving finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream (slow cooked milk—originally created by dairy farmers to prevent milk waste), cakes, and assorted desserts. BACCARAT HOTEL NEW YORK (~$90 PER PERSON) The Baccarat Hotel serves a higher end afternoon tea experience that can be made vegan. You need to make reservations in advance to reserve space in their tea room, and make sure to ask for it to be vegan when you set your date! I got the Prince of Wales Tea Menu for $90 per person, and it came with savory bites, pastries (with actual gold flakes, fancy fancy!), and sandwiches. I was super full after eating all those bites, but I especially loved the specialty blends of tea brewed by the Tea Sommelier in a beautiful space. BLANK SLATE TEA ($30 FOR ~2 PEOPLE) This cute coffee shop specializes in tea served from a beautiful pink room. They recently started serving afternoon tea, called the “tea tier” for $30, and they can veganize it with a couple vegan sweets like banana bread, avocado toast, beet hummus, and a few small veganized burrata (no cheese) sandwiches. Don’t forget to also get the rose latte to get some extra pink in your Instagram photo! LITTLE CHOC APOTHECARY (~$30 FOR TWO PEOPLE) New York’s first vegan crepe shop in Brooklyn obviously serves the best crepes, but did you know they also serve up afternoon tea? This is the only spot on this list that is 100% vegan, which means you can go wild eating everything! They have both a savory ($29) and sweet ($25) tea option, both which include cookies (I had an earl gray one that was wild), vegan scones + cream/jam, and obviously a long list of specialized teas! The savory also includes either a sweet OR savory crepe, so I personally think that’s a win win. Let me know if there’s any afternoon tea spots I missed!
