ISO 45001:2018 outlines requirements for an occupational safety and health
(OH&S), management system. It also provides guidance on its use. This is to
allow organizations to create safe and healthy workplaces, by preventing
work-related injuries and ill health and by actively improving their OH&S
performance.

ISO 45001:2018 is applicable to any organization that wishes to establish,
implement and maintain an OH&S management system to improve occupational health
and safety, eliminate hazards and minimize OH&S risks (including system
deficiencies), take advantage of OH&S opportunities, and address OH&S management
system nonconformities associated with its activities.

ISO 45001:2018 helps an organization to achieve the intended outcomes of its
OH&S management system. In accordance with an organization's OH&S policies, the
expected outcomes of an OH&S system are:

a) continual improvement of OH&S performance;


b) Fulfillment of legal requirements and other obligations;

c) achievement of OH&S objectives.

ISO 45001:2018 applies to all organizations, regardless of their size, type or
activities. It is applicable to the OH&S risks under the organization's control,
taking into account factors such as the context in which the organization
operates and the needs and expectations of its workers and other interested
parties.


ISO 45001:2018 does not state specific criteria for OH&S performance, nor is it
prescriptive about the design of an OH&S management system.

ISO 45001:2018 enables an organization, through its OH&S management system, to
integrate other aspects of health and safety, such as worker wellness/wellbeing.

ISO 45001:2018 does not address issues such as product safety, property damage
or environmental impacts, beyond the risks to workers and other relevant
interested parties.

document cannot be accepted unless they are fully integrated into the
organization's OH&S management systems and are met without exception.



For organizations that are serious about improving employee safety, reducing
workplace risks and creating better, safer working conditions, there's ISO
45001.

According to the International Labour Organization, more than 7 600 people die
from work-related accidents or diseases every single day. An ISO committee of
occupational safety and health experts began work on an International Standard
that could save nearly three million lives every year. The approach is similar
to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. ISO 45001 is a continuation of the international
standards that have been successful in this area, such as OHSAS18001, the
International Labour Organization ILO OSH Guidelines, and various national
standards.

ILO-OSH 2001 Guidelines for Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems
The ILO has designed these guidelines as a practical tool for assisting
organizations and competent institutions as a means of achieving continual
improvement in occupational safety and health (OSH) performance. These
guidelines were developed in accordance with internationally accepted principles
as defined by the ILO's three-partite constituencies. The practical
recommendations of these guidelines are intended for use by all those who have
responsibility for OSH management. The second edition also includes new
additions in the bibliography.
