CENTRAL MIDWEST WATER SCIENCE CENTER

Welcome to the Central Midwest Water Science Center’s (CMWSC) Website. We offer
information on streamflow, water quality, water-use, and groundwater data for
Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. We conduct unbiased, scientific hydrologic
investigations & research projects to effectively manage CMWSC and our Nation's
water resources through joint efforts with our partners.

PEAK STREAMFLOW TRENDS IN IOWA AND THEIR RELATION TO CHANGES IN CLIMATE, WATER
YEARS 1921–2020

This study summarizes trends and change points for peak and daily streamflow in
Iowa from water years 1921 through 2020. Nonstationarity in peak streamflow in
Iowa can include monotonic trends, change points, and changes in seasonality.
Spatial patterns of nonstationarity in peak streamflow, daily streamflow, and
monthly climatic data (observed and modeled) were examined across four temporal
perio

GEOMORPHIC CHANGE, HYDROLOGY, AND HYDRAULICS OF CAULKS CREEK, WILDWOOD, MISSOURI

Caulks Creek is a small stream that flows through the city of Wildwood in
western St. Louis County, Missouri. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation
with the city of Wildwood, has documented historical and recent geomorphic
change along Caulks Creek, simulated the hydrologic and hydraulic response of
Caulks Creek to a variety of design storm scenarios, and simulated bank retreat
resulting from

SUSPENDED SEDIMENT AND TRACE ELEMENT TRANSPORT IN THE BIG RIVER DOWNSTREAM FROM
THE OLD LEAD BELT IN SOUTHEASTERN MISSOURI, 2018–21

Lead Belt, an area of major lead mining from the 1860s until 1972 where more
than 8.5 million tons of lead were mined. After active mining ceased, the
effects of mining activities persisted in the Big River system because of large
mine waste pile erosion, and floodplain sediment and streambank contamination
along several tributaries and the main stem of the Big River. Lead-contaminated

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH SHEDS LIGHT ON PROPER ANALYSIS AND SAMPLE HANDLING FOR THE
TIRE-DERIVED CONTAMINANTS 6PPD AND 6PPD-QUINONE

Tire and road wear particles have been shown to cause acute effects to sensitive
aquatic animals and degrade their habitats. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
scientists developed methods to accurately identify aquatic compounds, such as
6PPD and 6PPD-quinone, that can cause acute mortality events in coho salmon
(Oncorhynchus kisutch).

STATEWIDE ASSESSMENT OF IOWA STREAMS LINKS LANDSCAPE CHARACTERISTICS TO
ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE SIGNATURES

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted the first statewide
assessment of antibiotics, antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic
resistant genes (ARGs) in streams (water column and bed sediment samples) across
Iowa. Results indicated that ARB and ARGs were prevalent, and a combination of
watershed characteristics (such as land use, livestock population, and human
population)...

A NATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF PESTICIDE, PFAS, MICROPLASTIC, AND ANTIBIOTIC
RESISTANCE GENE EXPOSURES IN WHITE-TAILED DEER

Research has documented exposures and consequential environmental health effects
of pesticides, PFAS, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes in
environmental biota. Little is known, however, regarding such effects in
white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ).
