However, both products face environmental challenges, and therefore as a natural step, we have since 2019 worked together with our local partner, Mr. Marcos Aguilar and team, in reforestation programs through our own nursery located in Tejeria, Veracruz. So far, we plant in the states of Veracruz, Hidalgo and Jalisco. Our programs aim for a positive impact not only for the environment but also for the community around them. By supporting local farmers (single mothers and low-income families) we maximize our social impact, helping them to diversify crops while we tackle the urgent problem of deforestation. We currently plant various types of fruit trees (avocado, lime, oranges etc.) and the agave planting (by regulation) is in the state of Jalisco, Mexico – world famous for its tequila. As of 2023, we are also a registered and approved broker with Climate Action Reserve (CAR) for Mexican Forest Projects. This offers clients and partners an alternative route to compensate for CO2 emissions using one of the few major internationally recognized certifications standards. FACTS ABOUT DEFORESTATION IN MEXICO www.inecol.mx/inecol/index.php/es/ concludes that Veracruz is the Mexican state with the highest risk of deforestation. Predicts that over a 7-year period, 4% of forest land will be lost. https://www.gob.mx/profepa deems that 108 areas in Mexico have a worrying rate of deforestation. The state of Veracruz has the highest number (9). According to https://www.globalforestwatch.org/ Mexico lost 274,000-hectare forest land in 2016, and the numbers are increasing. According to www.fao.org/home/es/, Mexico lost 3.2 million hectare of forest land between 2001-2017 equating a 6% loss. 34% of the fauna in Mexican forest is endemic and 12% will be lost in a few years if the deforestation continues at the current rate. www.nasa.gov in a 2013 study – using Satellites – puts Mexico in top 3 among countries with deforestation (with indicators: Malaysia: 115, Nepal: 114 y Mexico: 92). Similar results are obtained in a recent study in a cooperation between Google & Matthew Hansen, University of Maryland. https://www.greenpeace.org/mexico/ rates Mexico as the 5th ranked country with respect to deforestation. A 2014 paper presented at the International Coffee Science Association (https://www.asic-cafe.org/) conference predicts that plunging coffee prices may be pressuring farmers to carve out land in rainforests for survival, and may drive deforestation by more than 100,000 hectares yearly – worldwide. Scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (https://www.kew.org) recently published a study in “Science Advances Journal” predicting that 60% of wild coffee species (there are approximately 124 In the world) are expected to become extinct due to deforestation, human settlement and climate change. NURSERY AND TREE PLANTING Initial time in nursery: 6-12 months depending on crop and weather. Some fruit trees are: Lime persa, Allspice, Guanabana and Avocado (Hass) – all endemic to the area. All fruit trees are planted in terrain with local farmers as contract farming. With our local cooperative headed by Marcos Aguilar, we work closely with 500+ local farms. We plant approximately 400 trees per hectare: This is a correct amount that allows enough light and space to each tree – such that the fruit trees are productive. Photosynthesis is key. After 2 years in terrain, the fruit trees give full crops and the cooperative will help the local farmers and families make an extra income by selling the fruits. Each fruit tree absorbs 28kg C02 annually.
