VIDEO: EMBRACING YOURSELF WITH YANYI VIDEO: EMBRACING YOURSELF WITH YANYI Print When Yanyi wrote The Year of Blue Water, his 2019 poetry collection that won the Yale Series of Younger Poets prize, he didn’t want to educate people about his experiences as a transgender Chinese American man. He didn’t realize he was writing a book at all. At the time, he was just keeping notes of stray thoughts that he wanted to hold onto. Yanyi told literary magazine BOMB that he wrote the first draft of the book when he was going through a mental health crisis, which he felt was keeping him from understanding himself. So he turned to dream logging—he woke up and wrote down his dreams without trying to interpret or understand them. This allowed him to feel like he was having a conversation with his subconscious, and to reconnect with himself. He paired this journal with a notebook where he wrote down sporadic thoughts as they came to him. He says this was a way to set aside the pressure of being a writer, including a feeling that he needed to “repay” his parents for the sacrifices they made bringing him to the United States, or of writing something so profound that it would stand as a testament to his history and culture. Instead, he says, he wanted to “honor the things that come into my mind that I think are valuable” while staying true to his identities. Yanyi acknowledges that his method seems, as he says, “woo-woo.” But it works for him to not only create celebrated poetry, but to feel comfortable with himself.
