Google has announced new initiatives aimed at transforming India’s agriculture
sector with artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. As part of its broader
strategy to support healthcare, sustainability, and agriculture, the tech giant
is rolling out tools designed to help farmers tackle challenges ranging from low
yields to the growing impact of climate change.

At the heart of its plans to modernise agriculture in India is the Agricultural
Landscape Understanding (ALU) Research API, which was introduced earlier this
year at the I/O Connect conference in Bangalore.

The ALU API uses AI and high-resolution satellite imagery to provide detailed
insights into individual farms. This is a massive shift from the more
generalised data currently available at village or district levels which
agriscientists and farmers have to work with today.




This new level of precision could help millions of farmers make smarter
decisions about crop management, water use, and resource allocation.

Google is also opening up the ALU API to developers across India, encouraging
them to come up with innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of local
farmers. These tools will help optimise resource allocation, refine farm
management practices, and support sustainable agriculture.

The company hopes that these partnerships will not only enhance farming
techniques but also contribute to a more climate-resilient agricultural sector.

Alok Talekar, Engineering Lead at Google DeepMind India, highlighted the
significance of the ALU API, noting that it was developed in collaboration with
researchers, government bodies, and Google’s AnthroKrishi team. He further added
that by offering developers access to this technology, Google aims to empower
the agricultural sector to tackle productivity pressures and climate threats
through data-driven solutions.

The company expressed optimism about forging deeper partnerships across sectors,
hoping that AI will play a crucial role in securing a more sustainable future
for India’s farmers and the agricultural industry at large. With the ALU API now
open to developers, Google is aiming to help India take a significant step
towards its next green revolution.
