Heart of the Storm is a high fantasy romance set in the world of Diosmaden—a
world where demons and elves are as common as humans, where dangerous beasts
lurk deep within the woods and the oceans, and there’s no such thing as horses.

You can purchase chapter 1 as a PDF or read along one page a week for free on
ComicFury! First page is out on Friday, the PDF is out now!

Patrons will also be getting one page every day until this Friday so they’ll be
3 pages ahead, as well as getting timelapses of the pages :)

Lotta new people visiting my blog today so ! I don’t animate very often I’m
afraid, and Thistle and Selene are not characters in my primary project, but if
you enjoy my work I make a webcomic! All the links to read it are above.

I have gone independent from comicfury and joined the spiderforest collective
(which you should also check out!) since I made this post, but I planned ahead

aw gosh I’m glad you’re enjoying it!! 🥺 I use clip studio paint for pretty much
all my art, including animation!

CSP is a really robust animation software. I think a lot of people don’t realise
this, but a cel inside of an animation folder can be a group of layers and not
just a single layer. So the optimal way to use the timeline is to have a new
animation folder for the parts of your animation that move with different
timings (that is, one animation folder for primary animation and then animation
folders for each your various secondary animations), and then inside of those
animation folders have your cels be folders so you can draw a layered image and
copy and paste freely:



I also use Blender for 3d modelling and Aseprite for pixel art :)

The reference models I used are the built in head model that comes with CSP 2.0
and up, and the arm is my own model that can be gotten from the asset store or
kofi!

HOTTED ANIMATION THOUGHTS N HOW I APPROACH MAKING THEM

i think most people are at least loosely familiar with the 12 principles of
animation (if youre not, heres a 2.5 minute video showcasing them!), but may not
necessarily know how to employ them. the main 3 i tend to focus on when I
animate is rhythm, telegraphing, and inertia so ill cover those there 👍


1. TIMING & RHYTHM

Timing is how you space out your frames both in how long an individual frame is
held for, and also when you drawn an inbetween of two frames you can favour one
frame slightly more than the other instead of drawing the exact average of the
cels, giving the favoured cel more timing weight.



Left line has the cels evenly spaced out on the timeline, right holds the first
cel for longer and the second cel slightly favours the last frame. It creates a
more interesting rhythm to the animation!

Rhythm is how I think of animation timing. Theres a beat like a song to every
animation I make, and creating an interesting beat is what makes an animation
fun to watch (for me, anyway):




2. ANTICIPATION / TELEGRAPHING



Before I animate a big change in movement, I like to telegraph that its coming.
Usually this is doing a little counter movement in the opposite direction, but
thats not the only way to telegraph a motion, e.g. eye movement can telegraph a
head turn!




3. FOLLOW-THROUGH / OVERSHOOT / INERTIA




Unless the movement is mechanical, it wont come to a hard stop and will have
some level of bounce or easing out to it. How much “bounce” you add will have a
big impact on how the animation feels, but a very subtle bounce will add a
natural feeling to the end of a motion.



Secondary animations will use a lot of this, note that the head and the hand
have a small amount of continuous motion (primary animation), and then the hair
has a lot of bounce and inertia (secondary animation which reacts to the primary
animation). Note the different amounts applied to the braid vs the sideburn vs
the bangs

“humans dont consort with demons” <- hilarious thing to say in a setting with

if youre new to these two, let me introduce u ^_^

Thistle » she looks human, walks like a human, and talks like a human, and
through Selene’s arcane senses… appears to be nothing but a regular human, but
nonetheless Thistle insists that she was originally a mighty lioness. She
doesn’t remember how she came to be transformed or anything really of her past,
but she knows two things: Her name is Thistle, and she is not human.

Selene » well as you can see, shes a fox demon LOL she wants to be a fabler, to
travel the world and record the history of the people and share with them the
greatest of tales she discovers. But fox demons are considered an ill omen by
many, mistrusted for their inclination for shapeshifting and illusion magic. She
doesn’t fully believe that Thistle isn’t really human at first, and as such
keeps her true identity secret. her big dramatic reveal doesnt go as expected
LOL 🦁 meow?

(these two do not feature in heart of the storm, theyre part of their own little
story thats unrelated 👍)
