MINDFUL ARCHITECTURE

UBC SALA Master of Architecture Thesis Project

2016

The full thesis book can be viewed HERE

in the fast pace and over-stimulation of our digital age, it has become
increasingly difficult to focus on meaningful and pertinent information. as we
live life through a screen and more isolated from our peers and ourselves,
disastrous effects on our physical and mental health emerge. modernity has
caused a shift away from the fundamentals of human experience, where the body
has been neglected in favour of sensory, digital and tectonic flatness. much of
contemporary architecture has reflected this zeitgeist. thus, human connection
and self awareness become increasingly important for maintaining inter-personal
well being and psychological balance, where community is grounded in meaningful
experiences within the public and private domains.

Mindful architecture is a method and practice of architectural discovery. it
seeks to reverse this trend and redirect our focus back to the duality of the
mind and body by focusing on the tactile and visceral qualities of the physical
world. architecture can contribute to well being as a form of therapy by evoking
contemplative states and heightened internal and external awareness through
mindfulness.

Both Western and eastern ideas about the body and representations in
contemporary art, give us a broad understanding of how we perceive, relate and
understand the human body. this project seeks to examine how architecture, when
viewed as a human body, can become a network of meaningful experiences,
interconnected and complementary to a larger whole. When subjectively
experienced, mindful architecture , can help us better understand our place
within the universal spectrum and our relationship to the city, our community
and, most importantly, to ourselves.

THEORY TO CRAFT: SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

UBC SALA Studio Project

with Jason Heinrich

2015 Vancouver, BC

ARCHITECTURAL PEDAGOGY INCREASINGLY DIVERSIFIES INTO MULTIPLE SCALES OF
CROSS-DISCIPLINARY THEORY, DESIGN, MAKING, AND EXPERIMENTING. THE SCHOOL BECOMES
AN UNPRECIOUS AND FLEXIBLE PLATFORM FOR COLLABORATION FROM THEORY TO CRAFT AND
FROM IDEAS TO MATERIALITY. THIS BECOMES EXPRESSED THROUGH MEANDERING
INTERCONNECTED SPACES BETWEEN WORKSHOPS/STUDIOS AND FORMAL LEARNING/EXHIBITION.
THIS COMPLEX PROMENADE ALLOWS FOR INFORMAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN STUDENTS,
FACULTY, AND THE PUBLIC WHILE VISUALLY AND AUDIBLY CONNECTING PROGRAMS DISPERSED
ACROSS THE LINEAR SITE.

JUST AS SALA INFORMS AND IS INFORMED BY THE URBAN PRESENT, THE PUBLIC ARE
INVITED UP THROUGH THE BUILDING TO VIEW FORMAL EXHIBITIONS AND THE PROCESS OF
DESIGN. THE FORM AND PROGRAM RESPOND TO THE DUALISTIC SITE OF FOREST AND PLAZA
AND MULTIPLE SCALES OF INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR CONDITIONS.
