ABOUT SMILEY FACE

A smiley face is a facial expression, or emotion in text conversations. Learn
how to read and make your own smiley faces or emoji. A smiley face is ordinary
keyboard characters used in text-based communications to represent a human
facial expression.

The smiley face is used to convey emotion, much in the same way we use facial
expressions when we communicate with people face-to-face. Despite its
simplicity, it helps others to correctly interpret your intent and meaning in
online conversations. A smiley face may also be called a text smiley, smiley or
emoticon.

POSITIVE QUOTES

LIGHTEN UP, JUST ENJOY LIFE, SMILE MORE, LAUGH MORE, AND DON'T GET SO WORKED UP
ABOUT THINGS.

SMILEY FACE

HAPPY FACE

The modern version of this emoji has a smiling mouth, happy eyes, rosy red
cheeks and eyebrows in the Apple artwork. Differs slightly from the Smiling Face
With Smiling Eyes emoji which does not include eyebrows, and has a different
style of smiling eyes.

When viewed on Android, no eyebrows are present in the Google artwork.

See the glossary for information on the term white in unicode character names.

Smiling Face was approved as part of Unicode 1.1 in 1993 under the name “White
Smiling Face” and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

TEARS OF JOY FACE

LAUGHING FACE

A yellow face with a big grin, uplifted eyebrows, and smiling eyes, each
shedding a tear from laughing so hard. Widely used to show something is funny or
pleasing. Not to be confused with the sad 😭 Loudly Crying Face. One of the ten
most popular emojis between 2014–2018 and was named the Oxford Dictionaries 2015
“Word of the Year”.

Face With Tears of Joy was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and added
to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

GRINNING FACE

GRINNING FACE

A yellow face with simple open eyes and a broad open smile, showing upper teeth
and tongue on some platforms. Conveys general pleasure and good cheer or humor.
Not to be confused with 😃 Grinning Face With Big Eyes or 😄 Grinning Face With
Smiling Eyes, which have the same smiles but more expressive eye shapes.

Grinning Face was approved as part of Unicode 6.1 in 2012 and added to Emoji
1.0 in 2015.

SMILEY FACE AND EMOJI MEANINGS

> SIMPLE EMOTICONS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE BUT IT’S THE RISE OF SMARTPHONES
> THAT HAVE REALLY BROUGHT THEM INTO THE MAINSTREAM. THEY’RE USED EVERYWHERE,
> FROM TEXT MESSAGES TO INSTAGRAM HASHTAGS. HOWEVER, WHAT EACH CHARACTER MEANS
> IS OFTEN SUBJECT TO DEBATE

Apple

Apple emojis are displayed on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV as
part of the Apple Color Emoji font. iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS all display the
same emoji set from Apple. iPhone X models
also support interactive Animoji and Memoji features.

The following two Private Use Area characters are not cross-platform
compatible but do work on Apple devices:

 *  Apple logo
 *  Beats 1 logo

 New emojis approved in 2018 as part of Emoji 11.0 are coming to Apple
 platforms in late 2018.

 Google

Google emoji images are used on stock Android devices     (such as Pixel
phones), Gmail Web Interface, Google   Hangouts, and ChromeOS. These are
provided as part of   the Noto Emoji project. As of 2018, these images are also
 used on in Slack on non-Apple platforms such as   Windows, Linux, and Android.

Platform vendors such as Samsung, LG and HTC use   some or all of their own
emoji images. Apps such   as WhatsApp and Facebook use their own emoji images,
while Signal and   Telegram for Android use Apple emoji images.

New emojis were released by Google as part of Android 9.0 Pie in August   2018.

 Microsoft

Emojis from Microsoft are supported on PCs or tablets running Windows or phones
running Windows Phone. This includes all brands of Windows PC, Microsoft
Surface, and Windows Phones such as the Lumia range.

Support for color emoji presentation on Windows is limited. Many applications on
Windows display emojis with a black and white text presentation instead of their
color version.

New emojis approved in 2018 as part of Emoji 11.0 are coming to Microsoft
platforms in late 2018.

  Samsung

Samsung devices use their own emoji designs, which are separate from those used
on stock Android in the Google Noto Emoji Font. These glossy emoji images appear
on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as
part of the Samsung Experience interface layer which runs on top of Android.

Note: WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook all use their own emoji designs which are
used instead of Google or Samsung emojis in their respective apps on Android
devices.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has its own emoji designs which are displayed on all WhatsApp platforms
(except WhatsApp for iOS, which uses Apple’s native emoji set).

Prior to WhatsApp having its own emojis, Apple emoji images were used by
WhatsApp on all platforms including Android and the web. In October
2017 WhatsApp released its own emoji set and ceased using Apple emojis on any
non-Apple platform.

Twitter

Twemoji is an open source emoji project, created and owned by Twitter. Emoji
designs from Twemoji can be found on the Twitter.com
website, TweetDeck and Twitter for Android. The native Twitter app for iOS uses
native emojis as provided by Apple and as such does not use Twemoji.

Due to the open-source nature of this emoji set, non-Twitter apps such
as Discord use Twemoji for emoji display.

In addition to standard emojis, custom Twitter emojis (sometimes known
as Hashflags) are enabled for some events and promotions, which are not part of
the Unicode Standard. These only display on Twitter for a limited time, and are
often linked to promotional campaigns.

Facebook

Facebook has many types of emoji designs, with the desktop website featuring its
own emoji images, as well as emoji reactions. Facebook Messenger previously
had its own emoji set which differed from the website.

WEBSITE

Facebook emojis appear for users of the Facebook website, Messenger for web, and
Messenger for Android. Facebook apps for iOS and Android use native emojis for
their respective platform instead of Facebook’s own emoji images.

REACTIONS

Facebook provides animated “emoji” reactions to posts. Facebook Reaction
Emojis do not correspond to specific emojis in the Unicode standard, but
approximate these characters:

 * 👍 Like — Thumbs Up
 * ❤️ Love — Beating Heart
 * 😂 Haha — Laughing Face
 * ☺️ Yay — Smiling Face (discontinued)
 * 😯 Wow — Surprised Face
 * 😢 Sad — Crying Face, showing an animated tear
 * 😡 Angry — Red / Angry / Pouting Face

    EmojiOne

EmojiOne is used on sites such as Discourse and Slack, either as the primary
emoji set or as a user-specified choice. Images from EmojiOne are available
under various licenses, with a early releases being open source.
