In my nonfiction faerie, merfolk, and general mythological creatures reference
books and google research, the Seelie/Unseelie division was referenced in the
fairy books, but it was not a dominant portion of the books and most of the
other types of faeries, merfolk, and other mythological creatures don’t refer to
that specific kind of division or any courts. In the early spring the power of
Faerie runs high, and the elves celebrate the holiday of Faerieluck to remind
themselves of their ancient kinship with the fey.Thanks for the encouragement,
you all! I was wondering because I found some rpgs that had faeries and the
Seelie/Unseelie and courts seemed to be a huge part of the faeries, so I was
curious if this was a common expectation for faerie characters in rpgs. Wicked
fey often worship the Queen of Air and Darkness. Good and neutral fey typically
worship Ehlonna or the Seelie Court. Fey can predict their natural deaths
several decades in advance, and celebrate their last years before undergoing the
Rite of Ultimate Passage, in which their knowledge is ceremonially passed down
to their heirs. Fey feuds may last hundreds or even thousands of years.įey, who
often live for millennia, see time as cyclical, with birth and death being only
stages in the great circle. Fey mothers sometimes leave their children with

are unconcerned with the wants and needs of mortals. Fey are broadly divided
between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. In the 4th edition of the D&D game, the
plane of Faerie is also known as the Feywild.įey possess a wide variety of
shapes and sizes, too many to be easily summarized, although an elflike
appearance or characteristics of plant life are common, as are insectoid
