Copy 5 LESSONS IN LIFE COACHING BB Brendon Burchard admin 20 hours ago This marks my 16th year as a full-time life coach. (I always say that it's actually been 20 years, but only 16 paid! My first 4 were just figuring it out, and I didn't realize it could be such a huge career. We all start somewhere). I've also had so many great coaches in the last decade, and I've certified and employed the world's best coaches. Working with a coach and this community changed my life more than anything else. And in May, I'll be certifying a new group of high-performance coaches. These are the world's best life coaches and performance coaches, who all practice the same research-backed framework that has led to the world's best-rated coaching program. (Over 100,000 sessions independently measured have shown a 9.7 client satisfaction rating, across 80 countries - the highest rated coaching curriculum in history). So the coaching industry is on my mind today, and I'd like to share 5 lessons about the state of the industry. 1. It's WAY BIGGER than people know... a $700 billion+ market now. Life coaching used to get bucketed into the 41 billion-dollar self-improvement market. But now, it's also in the $300+ billion mental health market and the $350+ billion corporate learning market. It's become THE most powerful role in most CEOs lives, and THE most effective tool for human behavior change. I've never read anything or experienced anything that changes lives more than 1-to-1 life coaching in terms of getting clarity about your future, setting and achieving goals, deepening relationships and influence, and improving overall life satisfaction. That's why this will remain one of the fastest growing careers and fields into the next decade. The REASON the market is bigger than most understand is because life coaches today ALSO offer continuing education: courses, books, groups, training, etc. Not all, but the best do and they're expanding the entire concept of the industry. 2. It's WAY simpler now. When I began 16 years ago, people didn't get the concept of life/wellness/executive coaching, and the tools for marketing yourself were expensive. Now, getting clients is easier bc everyone knows about the power of coaching, and the marketing tools are basically free. Thank you social media, thank you Zoom, thank you Facetime and video calls, thank you free trials to almost any marketing platform. 3. It's a VIRTUAL and a GROUP model now (and thus, WAY more lucrative). Every successful coach I know that wants to make real impact has added group coaching to their arsenal. They're coaching groups of people (customers, clients, enterprise) via Zoom and live video, and they're earning just as much doing that as they are 1-on-1. This means coaches are reaching scaled impact now. I began doing this in 2010 and was, to my knowledge, the first to hit 7 figures with a research-driven, curriculum-based virtual group life coaching offering. What's different in the last decade? Points #1 and #2 above! Bigger market, easier entry. 4. The OLD WAY is totally dead. The old way of coaching (amazingly, it's still taught ugh) is basically this: Call your client and ask, "How's it going? What are your goals? What's getting in your way? How will you cope and advance? What's your plan and commitment? Ok.... byeeee, talk next time yay!". That "get-goals-make-plan" model is... commoditized. It bores clients. It fails to elevate them beyond short-term goals. It makes coaches mediocre accountability coaches versus LIFE coaches that elevate human experience and challenge clients in meaningful ways. There's a higher expectation now. Coaching sessions need to be based on a challenging curriculum, and more and more companies and clients insist on research-backed frameworks for holistic and long-term support. This is why certifications and coaching models that are based on curriculum (like Certified High Performance Coaching) continue to set the bar and command higher fees. It's also why so many coaches go beyond just the session with follow-up worksheets, recommendations, training and tools. 5. It's not about personality now. You used to have to "be known" and have certain background to become a credible or highly-paid life coach. Now, it's not about the coach as it is the process, or what I've taught as "the framework" since 2008. People don't hire you because your personality, your success, your background... they hire you because of the process you use to take them to the next level. It's not to say that we shouldn't all develop our personal brands, but trust me when it comes to marketing and client acquisition it's all about the curriculum/process/framework. This is good news for those just starting out - you don't have to be famous on social media. You need a proven framework and that's what you're marketing as much as "you." Further, the coaching industry is no longer obsessed with "personality profiles" or "strengths preferences." It's now based on progressive challenging sessions that lead to outcomes even greater than the client's personal style, preference or event goals -- it's about the big picture, one's full life and life satisfaction and their real GROWTH. It's about real personal change not just a singular goal at work. It's about high performance in every area of life, and those who can deliver that are winning at previously unimagined levels of income and influence. Like this? Want more? I'll be teaching a 60-minute webinar on how the modern coaching industry works: who gets paid the most, what marketing strategies work to launch your career, what's the best business model, and how to have maximum impact with clients.
