SUPPORTING THE ONLY FOOD BANK IN LATVIA DURING COVID

Covid-19 is hitting the poor hardest. Families with children in Latvia are in
urgent need of your support for daily meals.

– 74% of Latvians have savings that amount to 1 month’s salary or less
– Covid lockdown has stopped many businesses, with several thousand Latvians
having lost their jobs. In October unemployment rate among those without a
degree was 20%
– Unemployment benefits are often paid with 2 months delay  

The only food bank charity in Latvia – Paedusai Latvijai
(http://www.paedusailatvijai.lv) run by Samaritans in Latvia
(http://samariesi.lv) – has been receiving more and more cries for help from
families where one of the parents has lost his/her job and as a result the
family does not have sufficient means to feed the children. 

Before Covid Paedusai Latvijai used to distribute 600 food packs every month.
The cost of one pack is €9~£8. 
We aim to raise enough funds for 1000 food packs = €9,000~£8,000.

During 2020 (April to December) around £6,500 were donated by 200 donors, all
paid to Paedusai Latvijai, but we will gratefully receive further donations
during 2021:

CHARITY COOKBOOK AND MATCHING DONATIONS ADD UP TO £11K IN DONATIONS

What does a charity do when during Covid restrictions it cannot arrange the
annual charity networking drinks/BBQ/ball and fundraise? It adapts in every
possible way it can. There is first time for everything – in that spirit at the
end of 2020 we approached our long term supporters, guests of previous events
with an unusual suggestion to contribute a favorite recipe for a charity
cookbook and donate towards 3 charity projects in Latvia:

 * meal kits for the only food bank in Latvia Paedusai Latvijai (matching
   donations agreed in principle by EBRD Community Initiative)
 * laughter therapy in children’s hospitals by the clowns of Dr Klauns
 * project where 75 children’s and parent’s charities in Latvia build small
   libraries of books on modern parenting techniques (matching donation provided
   by international money transfer company Opal Transfer)

81 co-authors joined in – by sharing recipes they learned more about their
friends and obtained cooking ideas for dark evenings of the lockdown 2.0 winter
but more importantly, supported charities in Latvia. £2,000 was donated for each
of the 3 projects, and together with the matched amounts a total of £11,000 was
attracted in charitable donations.




MODERN PARENTING METHODS BOOK #2 DISTRIBUTED TO 75 CHARITIES

Second book to build up the libraries of 75 children’s and parent’s charities in
Latvia with books in Latvian on modern parenting techniques has been distributed
– 500 copies of another book in the series of Dr Montgomery Brinumu laiks were
given away free of charge in summer. The charities can in turn lend these books
to parents and arrange discussions on parenting approaches.

A long term investment from our side, but a necessary one, that hopefully will
one day lead to a much smaller number of kids ending up in children’s crisis
centres (currently the number is still 1,200 every year and that is 1,200 too
many).


10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON 1ST NOV 2019

Lots of honey cake (meduskūka), singing Sveiks lai dzīvo, clapping to cheer
volunteering of all shapes and forms, generous donations at auction and towards
pledges, old friends networking with new supporters – a grand way to celebrate
10 years of caring and sharing. Looking forward to our next decade. 

Pledges included projects by Mission Possible (donations were subsequently
matched by EBRD Community Initiative) and Debesmanna – Marta – Atvertiba –
Palidzesim.lv

MAKING MODERN PARENTING BOOKS IN LATVIAN MORE ACCESSIBLE

We have been supporting children’s crisis centres with grants and donations in
kind for a decade now. But we feel that to some extent we have merely been
mitigating the consequences, not the causes of the problem, why over 1,000
children in Latvia every year end up in a crisis centre. We would like to
contribute more to the change of the parenting culture in Latvia, complementing
efforts of several charities in Latvia that promote more modern parenting
methods, discuss the latest research in the cognitive behaviour field, help
young parents to broaden their knowledge.

We are therefore expanding our activities with a new long term project – making
modern parenting books in Latvian language more accessible. We have teamed up
with Publishing house Zvaigzne ABC and several charities in Latvia and corporate
donors, businesses run by entrepreneurs from Latvian diaspora.

We invited children’s and parent’s charities in Latvia to sign up for their free
copies of the modern parenting books. By mid 2019 over 70 charities had shared
their details with us. We continue to accept new applications.

500 copies of the inaugural parenting book of the project – Hedvig Montgomery
“Vecaku magija” – were distributed to over 70 charities in Latvia in July 2019.
Update on the subsequent distributions to follow in late 2019.


PIONEER CORPORATE DONOR HELPS TO RAISE RECORD £10,000 DURING CHARITY NETWORKING
DRINKS

Giving for Latvia family welcomed the spring with fantastic charity networking
evening. 
 
Guests from 3 countries were treated with beautiful view of the London Eye and
Latvian style snacks (think rye bread, lard, horseradish). 
 
Our pioneer corporate donor OpalTransfer was matching donations for one of the
charity pledges, that we were raising money for: modern parenting book,
playground for special needs kids, education for women in prison
 
Embassy of Latvia in the UK and Ambassador Baiba Braze brought truly exclusive
experiences auction prizes.
 
Networking opportunities were outstanding, as proven by the afterparty that
lasted till 4am.
 
And the positive side effect – record £10,000 raised during one evening. This
will help to achieve so much. Sincere thanks to everyone and we will keep
everyone posted on the use of funds via our Facebook posts.
 


FIRST CHARITY SIMUL CHESS WITH GRANDMASTER IN LONDON

3 hours of steam, sighs and laughter resulted in beautiful £435 raised during
the 1st charity simultaneous chess exhibition with Grandmaster at the London
Latvian House.

We are consulting with the Latvian Welfare Fund, London branch on the use of the
donations and will keep you posted.

CENTENARY CHARITY DRINKS TO MARK #LV100

How best to celebrate centenary of a country? Our volunteers insisted – with
charity drinks.

Networking + drinks reception + a bit of charity was a fantastic way to mark
Latvia’s centenary.

Over £3,500 were raised for 5 charity pledges in celebration of the Centenary of
Latvia.

UK for the support.
