In the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the height of spring but not quite yet summer. To the south, autumn is kicking in, along with the dry season in most destinations. Whether it’s to catch the Carlsbad Flower Fields in full bloom near San Diego, California, or soak up the sun on a road trip throughout Catalonia, Spain, you can’t go wrong with these stunning sunny destinations. Keep scrolling for some can’t-miss May hot spots you’ll be grateful you crossed off your travel bucket list. As always, check for closures and travel restrictions, particularly if crossing borders, before planning your trip. CATALONIA, SPAIN Although it’s a beloved place to start, there’s more to Spain’s Catalonia region than Barcelona, and May is when you should make your way to the coastal area. It’s not quite peak season, so there will be fewer crowds at the beaches, restaurants and major attractions. Rent a car and see where the open road takes you. From checking out the walled city of Montblanc to getting a reservation at El Cellar de Can Roca in Girona, which has been named the World’s Best Restaurant multiple times, the possibilities are endless. CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA Think of springtime in northern San Diego’s Carlsbad Flower Fields as California’s version of Amsterdam’s tulip season. Immerse yourself in this springtime activity that only happens during this time of the year. Just don’t forget to book tickets in advance online. Then hang out longer and hit the Southern California beaches or pick blueberries in the Flower Fields’ popular patch nearby. You can even treat yourself to some deals at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets. CUSCO, PERU Have you always wanted to hike to Machu Picchu? May is a highly recommended time to go as it marks the beginning of the area’s dry season. There’s a low chance of downpours so you won’t have to worry about slipping or falling as you climb. Instead of staying near Machu Picchu, avoid the crowds and extreme elevation by spending the night in Cusco after your visit. Take a scenic train ride into the town, and once there, enjoy the chance to take in more history visiting the ruins of the Sacred Valley. RAMATUELLE, FRANCE You can’t turn down a vacation to the South of France. Situated right in the middle of the St-Tropez peninsula, Ramatuelle is an underrated luxury stop travelers shouldn’t overlook. Not only is it the perfect off-the-grid getaway with a population of only 2,000 people, but the former medieval village makes the town a hidden architectural gem, and in the spring it comes alive with musical events like an annual salsa festival. On top of that, you’ll love walking through the olden streets and quaint shops. To get a deeper sense of local life, note that home and villa rentals in place of hotels are the standard in Ramatuelle. KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA For those looking for a more tropical adventure, head to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. May is the ideal time to visit as the humidity is low, which makes walking around the city more enjoyable. The blend of cultures is one of the biggest draws of Kuala Lumpur, as is, of course, how they’re reflected in the local street food. Let yourself get lost in trying the different foods with Indian, Chinese, Malay and Western influences. Make sure to also take in panoramic views of the city at the Menara Kuala Lumpur, deemed the seventh-tallest tower in the world at more than 1,000 feet high. BOTSWANA, AFRICA Going on safari in Botswana’s Kalahari Reserve requires a bit of strategic planning, though May does mark the dry season when there’s usually no rainfall. The Okavango Delta, Moremi and Chobe national parks are permanent water sources of the landlocked country, making them perfect places for unbelievable wildlife viewing. You won’t have to chase the animals; they’ll come to you if you’re in these areas. JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING The Tetons are a majestic sight. (Photo: Getty Images) In case you can’t make it overseas to see animals, consider a stateside journey to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It’s a major ski and snowboard town, but you can also opt for an incredible wildlife tour in the springtime. You’ll witness bears with their cubs, large herds of elk and moose, and so much more. Take in the beauty of the great outdoors in Wyoming and also consider taking a swing at outdoor sports such as fly-fishing, off-road bicycling and other adventure sports. KATHMANDU, NEPAL Test your trekking skills with a trip to Nepal. May is a popular time to check out the trails; the temperature is in the high 60s or low 70s, and the blooming of the rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower, is truly a sight to see. For a panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley, make your way up to the Amitabha Monastery from the ancient temple of Swayambhu, often referred to as the Monkey Temple. The Kalani hike in a small village outside of Kathamandu is also a common and easy trek with gorgeous forest views and plenty of local shops to pop into along the way. For anyone looking to challenge themselves and quite literally gain new perspectives, go to Nepal and don’t look back. It’s an expedition you’ll never forget.
