Addiction can be defined as a compulsive disorder where a person has; impaired
control, persistent repeated ritualized behaviors, cravings and relapse.
Addiction is a response to stress and while in the short term is highly
effective as an attempt to cope by self soothing in the long term has negative
effects on; relationships, professional careers, education and legal
consequences. Stress, unhealthy caregiver attachments, ADHD and trauma
(physical, sexual and emotional) are common factors associated with alcohol and
substance use disorders.
