GREATER NEW YORK HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN

The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign helps save lives by installing free
smoke alarms in homes and by educating people about home fire safety. In NYC, we
are proud to partner with the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) and
the FDNY Foundation to bring this program to the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Queens and Staten Island.

JUST ONE DAY OF YOUR LIFE CAN CHANGE SOMEONE ELSE’S FOREVER

(Para español, visite ActivaTuAlarma.org)

HOME FIRES CLAIM SEVEN LIVES EVERY DAY, BUT HAVING WORKING SMOKE ALARMS CAN CUT
THE RISK OF DEATH BY HALF.

That’s why the American Red Cross is rallying volunteers to install free smoke
alarms nationwide, as part of our Sound the Alarm events.

This year we’ll install free smoke alarms, create escape plans and share fire
safety information.

Join us for a rewarding day at a Sound the Alarm event near you. Make an even
greater impact and donate to help families prepare for, respond to and recover
from home fires.

‘It Could Have Been a Whole Lot Worse’: Smoke Alarms Save Family’s Lives

Audra was cooking dinner for her son and family friends when a dishtowel caught
fire. “It was pitch-black in the house,” she said. “You couldn’t breathe, and it
was just to the point where we thought the whole house was going to go up. I
just thank God for the [smoke] alarms.”

Red Cross volunteers had installed free smoke alarms in Audra’s home five months
earlier through the Home Fire Campaign, which aims to prevent fire tragedies.
