RUSSIA-1

Russia-1 (Russian: Россия-1) is a state-owned Russian television channel founded
in 1991. It belongs to the All-Russia State Television and Radio Company
(VGTRK). Russia Channel was previously known as RTR (Russian: РТР). Russia-1 has
the second largest audience in Russian television. In a typical week, it is
viewed by 75% of urban Russians, compared to 83% for the leading channel,
Channel One. The two channels are similar in their politics, and they compete
directly in entertainment. Russia-1 has many regional variations and broadcasts
in many languages.


HISTORY


SOVIET PERIOD

Russia-1 had started in 1965 as Program 3 in the Soviet Union and moved to
Channel 2 in 1967 when a new channel, Program 4 (now known as NTV), was
officially launched and the Moscow Program, which started in 1956, was
transferred to Channel 3. From the very start, it only hosted programs produced
by the Ministry of Education of the Soviet Union, as well as children's
programming, in monochrome. The move to a new channel frequency resulted in it
being renamed Program 2 and becoming the second home of the national newscast
Vremya since 1968.

RUSSIAN WINE

Russian wine refers to wine made in the Russian Federation and to some extent
wines made in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics though this later
referencing is an inaccurate representation of wines from Armenia, Azerbaijan,
Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine. The phrase Russian wine more properly refers to wine
made in the southern part of the Russian Federation-including the areas around
Dagestan, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, Krasnodar Krai, Rostov, and Stavropol
Krai. Russia currently has the following controlled appellations that correspond
to the sorts of grapes: Sibirkovy (Сибирьковый), Tsimlyanski Cherny (Цимлянский
чёрный), Plechistik (Плечистик),Narma (Нарма), and Güliabi Dagestanski (Гюляби
Дагестанский).


HISTORY

Wild grape vines have grown around the Caspian, Black and Azov seas for
thousands of years with evidence of viticulture and cultivation for trade with
the Ancient Greeks found along the shores of the Black Sea at Phanagoria and
Gorgippia. It is claimed that the Black Sea area is the world's oldest wine
region.

ARKTIKA-CLASS ICEBREAKER

The Arktika class is a Russian (former Soviet) class of nuclear-powered
icebreakers; they are the largest and most powerful icebreakers ever
constructed. Ships of the Arktika class are owned by the federal government, but
were operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company (MSCO) until 2008, when they were
transferred to the fully government-owned operator Atomflot. Of the ten civilian
nuclear-powered vessels built by Russia (and the Soviet Union), six have been of
this type. They are used for escorting merchant ships in the Arctic Ocean north
of Siberia as well as for scientific and recreational expeditions to the Arctic.


HISTORY

On July 3, 1971, construction began on a conceptual design of a larger nuclear
icebreaker, dubbed Arktika, in the Baltic Shipyard in then Leningrad. Four years
later, on December 17, 1975, Moscow and Leningrad received radio messages
informing them that sea trials had been completed successfully. The newest and
largest nuclear icebreaker at the time was ready for the Arctic.

   westerner has always been difficult, a bureaucratic nightmare, but this year

   In summer 2022 I went to one of my most desirable travel destinations -
   Norilsk. Norilsk is a closed city in Russian arctic which is famous for being
   one of the most polluted cities in the world. Norilsk is one of the most
   remote towns on the planet, located deep in the northernmost parts of
   Siberia, within the Arctic Circle. Accessible only by air, there are no roads
   to connect it to wider Russia, making it highly closed-off from the outside
   world. The town was built during the 1930s, as the site of a Gulag labour
   camp. Most of the housing blocks and main buildings were built by prisoners,
   who were forced to work all hours of the day in gruelling sub-zero
   temperatures. According to archives, it is estimated that 16,806 prisoners
   died under these cruel conditions, between the years of 1...

   Vorkuta is a coal-mining town in the Komi Republic, Russia, situated just

westerner has always been difficult, a bureaucratic nightmare, but this year is
the first time Matt and I have really had any issues. We arrived in my hometown
of Kemerovo, Siberia, after crossing in to Russia at Kaliningrad and flying to
Novosibirsk. Once here and staying with my family, we went to register with the
local authorities, but everything turned out to be a little complicated to say
the least. This is a week in our lives here staying in Siberia as we hang out
with my family and prepare for New years eve (the biggest celebration of the
year in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and many other former Soviet countries).

In summer 2022 I went to one of my most desirable travel destinations - Norilsk.
Norilsk is a closed city in Russian arctic which is famous for being one of the
most polluted cities in the world. Norilsk is one of the most remote towns on
the planet, located deep in the northernmost parts of Siberia, within the Arctic
Circle. Accessible only by air, there are no roads to connect it to wider
Russia, making it highly closed-off from the outside world. The town was built
during the 1930s, as the site of a Gulag labour camp. Most of the housing blocks
and main buildings were built by prisoners, who were forced to work all hours of
the day in gruelling sub-zero temperatures. According to archives, it is
estimated that 16,806 prisoners died under these cruel conditions, between the
years of 1935-1956. The Norilsk Nickel corporation is in many ways a de facto
governing body over the local population, employing a large percentage of
residents and exercising tight control over the rights and rules of Norilsk

the Arctic Circle, this town is mostly known for the fact that it is slowly
dying. After the fall of the Soviet Union, mines were privatized and many people
began moving further south. Many of the mines had been abandoned and by
September 2020, the estimated population was only about 50,000. That is down

fascinating at the same time, especially if you like off-the-beaten-path
destinations! And we surely are into that! All areas of Vorkuta are full with
old Soviet buildings that are now abandoned, with the local administration that
sees no sense (but most importantly has no money for it) in tearing them down.
The result? From most streets, Vorkuta looks like a GHOST TOWN.

Vorkuta is a coal-mining town in the Komi Republic, Russia, situated just north
of the Arctic Circle. Although it is actually the fourth-largest city north of
the Arctic Circle, this town is mostly known for the fact that it is slowly
dying. After the fall of the Soviet Union, mines were privatized and many people
began moving further south. Many of the mines had been abandoned and by
September 2020, the estimated population was only about 50,000. That is down

fascinating at the same time, especially if you like off-the-beaten-path
destinations! And we surely are into that! All areas of Vorkuta are full with
old Soviet buildings that are now abandoned, with the local administration that
sees no sense (but most importantly has no money for it) in tearing them down.
The result? From most streets, Vorkuta looks like a GHOST TOWN.

   westerner has always been difficult, a bureaucratic nightmare, but this year
   is the first time Matt and I have really had any issues. We arrived in my

   In summer 2022 I went to one of my most desirable travel destinations -
   Norilsk. Norilsk is a closed city in Russian arctic which is famous for being
   one of the most polluted cities in the world. Norilsk is one of the most
   remote towns on the planet, located deep in the northernmost parts of
   Siberia, within the Arctic Circle. Accessible only by air, there are no roads
   to connect it to wider Russia, making it highly closed-off from the outside
   world. The town was built during the 1930s, as the site of a Gulag labour
   camp. Most of the housing blocks and main buildings were built by prisoners,
   who were forced to work all hours of the day in gruelling sub-zero
   temperatures. According to archives, it is estimated that 16,806 prisoners
   died under these cruel conditions, between the years of 1935-1956. The
   Norilsk Nickel corporation is in many ways a de facto governing body over the
   local population, employing a large percentage of residents and exercising

This is our life in Rus­sia in late 2022 / 2023. Trav­el­ing to Rus­sia as a
west­ern­er has al­ways been dif­fi­cult, a bu­reau­crat­ic night­mare, but this
year is the first time Matt and I have re­al­ly had any is­sues. We ar­rived in
my home­town of Ke­mero­vo, Siberia, after cross­ing in to Rus­sia at
Kalin­ingrad and fly­ing to Novosi­birsk. Once here and stay­ing with my
fam­i­ly, we went to reg­is­ter with the local au­thor­i­ties, but ev­ery­thing
turned out to be a lit­tle com­pli­cat­ed to say the least. This is a week in
our lives here stay­ing in Siberia as we hang out with my fam­i­ly and pre­pare
for New years eve (the biggest cel­e­bra­tion of the year in Rus­sia, Ukraine,

In sum­mer 2022 I went to one of my most de­sir­able trav­el des­ti­na­tions -
No­ril­sk. No­ril­sk is a closed city in Rus­sian arc­tic which is fa­mous for
being one of the most pol­lut­ed cities in the world. No­ril­sk is one of the
most re­mote towns on the plan­et, lo­cat­ed deep in the north­ern­most parts of
Siberia, with­in the Arc­tic Cir­cle. Ac­ces­si­ble only by air, there are no
roads to con­nect it to wider Rus­sia, mak­ing it high­ly closed-off from the
out­side world. The town was built dur­ing the 1930s, as the site of a Gulag
labour camp. Most of the hous­ing blocks and main build­ings were built by
pris­on­ers, who were forced to work all hours of the day in gru­elling
sub-ze­ro tem­per­a­tures. Ac­cord­ing to archives, it is es­ti­mat­ed that
16,806 pris­on­ers died under these cruel con­di­tions, be­tween the years of
1935-1956. The No­ril­sk Nick­el cor­po­ra­tion is in many ways a de facto
gov­ern­ing body over the local pop­u­la­tion, em­ploy­ing a large per­cent­age
of res­i­dents and ex­er­cis­ing tight con­trol over the rights and rules of

Vorku­ta is a coal-min­ing town in the Komi Re­pub­lic, Rus­sia, sit­u­at­ed
just north of the Arc­tic Cir­cle. Al­though it is ac­tu­al­ly the
fourth-largest city north of the Arc­tic Cir­cle, this town is most­ly known for
the fact that it is slow­ly dying. After the fall of the So­vi­et Union, mines
were pri­va­tized and many peo­ple began mov­ing fur­ther south. Many of the
mines had been aban­doned and by Septem­ber 2020, the es­ti­mat­ed pop­u­la­tion
was only about 50,000. That is down from 115,646 in 1989. ❗❗❗ I re­cent­ly

All areas of Vorku­ta are full with old So­vi­et build­ings that are now
aban­doned, with the local ad­min­is­tra­tion that sees no sense (but most
im­por­tant­ly has no money for it) in tear­ing them down. The re­sult? From
most streets, Vorku­ta looks like a GHOST TOWN.

RUSSIA-1

Russia-1 (Russian: Россия-1) is a state-owned Russian television channel founded
in 1991. It belongs to the All-Russia State Television and Radio Company
(VGTRK). Russia Channel was previously known as RTR (Russian: РТР). Russia-1 has
the second largest audience in Russian television. In a typical week, it is
viewed by 75% of urban Russians, compared to 83% for the leading channel,
Channel One. The two channels are similar in their politics, and they compete
directly in entertainment. Russia-1 has many regional variations and broadcasts
in many languages.


HISTORY


SOVIET PERIOD

Russia-1 had started in 1965 as Program 3 in the Soviet Union and moved to
Channel 2 in 1967 when a new channel, Program 4 (now known as NTV), was
officially launched and the Moscow Program, which started in 1956, was
transferred to Channel 3. From the very start, it only hosted programs produced
by the Ministry of Education of the Soviet Union, as well as children's
programming, in monochrome. The move to a new channel frequency resulted in it
being renamed Program 2 and becoming the second home of the national newscast
Vremya since 1968.
