As the conference heads into its first season featuring 18 teams, the Buckeyes were comfortably picked as the favorite in the 14th annual cleveland.com Preseason Big Ten Football Poll. That’s paired with transfer portal additions that include quarterbacks Will Howard and Julian Sayin, running back Quinshon Judkins, offensive lineman Seth McLaughlin and safety Caleb Downs. The roster also features freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, the top player in the 2024 recruiting class. No other newcomer — USC, UCLA and Washington — finished higher than sixth. Michigan received one second-place vote as the only other team to do so. Last season, Michigan was the runaway favorite to win a third straight conference title, and went on to accomplish that plus win a national title. A year later it enters college football’s new era under new leadership with Sherrone Moore replacing Jim Harbaugh — now with the Los Angeles Chargers — as head coach. Cleveland.com picked up the responsibility for organizing the poll when the Big Ten dropped it 14 years ago. Beat writers from all 18 Big Ten teams were invited to participate, as were some who cover the entire league or have a national perspective. A total of 27 voters participated. Most other major conferences organize and release a preseason poll. Big Ten Media Days are Wednesday and Thursday in Indianapolis. The conference will release a watch list of players — five from each division — but no predicted finish. Each writer was asked to vote 1-18, with first-place votes worth 18 points, second-place votes worth 17 and so on. Every ballot featured Ohio State making it, while all but one featured Oregon. Penn State was featured on 18 ballots, Michigan on 15 and three featured Iowa. It’s been so all but once since Day became head coach in 2019, placing second in his first season. • Ohio State also received only first- or second-place votes. • Michigan’s lone second-place vote came at the expense of Oregon. • Washington received votes ranging from 4th to 16th, coming in at No. 10. Fellow newcomers from the west coast USC and UCLA finished sixth and 15th. • Purdue was the only team not to receive a single vote higher than 13th. However, Indiana — which finished 17th — received 44.4% of the last-place votes. • While only two teams received first-place votes, five different teams received last-place votes. • We also asked voters to predict who would win Big Ten Coach of the Year.
