KOFI1:11 DRAWN TIDE INTERVIEW Teacher, painter and musician, Drawn Tide (Victoria Halliburton) speaks about her new single, High Rise. After her recent successful release of ‘Wild Ocean’, we spoke to Victoria to find out a little bit more about how things are going and her latest release. So Victoria, nice to speak with you again. Just to catch up, it’s been a few months now, how are you feeling about your first single release ‘Wild Ocean’? Well it’s been pretty surreal, I’m really happy with how it’s gone. Being a completely new artist and seeing the overwhelmingly positive response has been really heart-warming and I’m so grateful for all the support. I can imagine it’s been quite a surreal experience, especially for the first release. So what tracks are you now enjoying at the moment? There’s quite a lot at the moment! ‘Too Bad Bad’ by Shakka, ‘Got My Brandy, Got My Beats’ by Kano, ‘Location’ by Dave/ Burna boy, also one of my all time greats that I’ve been playing a lot is ‘Miles Away’ by Phil Cook. Black hole by Griff is also on my playlist. I’m really into my ‘Running Mix’ playlist which is mostly grime music/ rap. Also enjoying ‘DM’ by Lia Caribe from the Quick Move Riddim and ‘Hope’ by Ben Hunter who also features on one of the upcoming tracks on the album. What songs have then inspired your new single ‘High Rise’? I would say one of the main tracks would be ‘The Lime Tree’ by Trevor Hall. The lyrics really resonated with me. It reminded me of times in a relationship when someone takes themselves away mentally to a different space where you can’t reach them. ‘Miles Away’ – by Phil Cook also led me to think about how you can be physically close to someone but also be absent simultaneously. Again, similarly with ‘Wild Ocean’ I’ve been inspired by ‘Patience’ by Nas & Damian Marley. Then there’s ‘It’s A Fire’ – Portishead, ‘In The Waiting Line’ – Zero 7, ‘Sail’ – Aim, Magnet – Toddla T/ Andrea Martin and also ‘The Fade’ by Megafaun – I especially like these lyrics. Megafaun are super talented. Yes those lyrics are very emotional and relatable, with your last single being about loss of loved ones, what has inspired this next track? It’s still about loss but in the sense of relationships ending. This track is about a very specific time for me personally when I was heartbroken. At that time, I liked driving through London late at night and listening to music. One night I was reflecting and looking at the eclectic nature of London’s architecture. The symmetry of the high-rise flats appealed to me as I like the way they cut through the sky. That was my starting point for this song, I was driving through Bow at 3am. Visually the blocks look beautiful and to me as an artist, they seem like living breathing things that have a mystery about them. I then thought about the deeper, darker side to living in a high-rise. It’s a very intricate situation socially as there are so many people in one space. The dynamic of living there is so complex in many ways. Relationships also can be very compicated and sometimes you just seem to end up on different floors so to speak. I remember you saying last time you wrote ‘Wild Ocean’ on the way to the studio. Did you do the same for ‘High Rise’ and what was the process like? As I mentioned, it stemmed from a late-night drive home from the studio. Kaey and I were having a jamming session in the studio and we came up with a tune which I then listened to on my journey back and when I got home I wrote this song. Kaey is a great producer to work with – we’ve been working together for a long time and he really is such a positive, humble person and fantastic to work with. It was also good to collaborate with Darren Mason on this one. He wrote some bars which compliment the song and accentuate the meaning. We’ve known each other forever and it’s great to work with someone who just gets you. I like the visual too for this song. I think it also accentuates the meaning. Working with Tone O is so great- he is so talented and able to translate the sound so well visually. It takes you on a journey for sure. What would you like your listeners to know about ‘High Rise’? I think that I would like people to resonate with the song and hope that it helps them to reflect introspectively. If someone feels like a relationship has or is fading, don’t be afraid to move forward, however hard it can be to let go. This song for me is about letting go. There is magic in everyone, just sometimes to access your own you need to change your situation. Now that events are back on, are there any gigs that you’re looking at performing or attending? I won’t be performing anything at a venue at the moment as I want to focus on producing and releasing the full album first. I’m also excited about making this a full visual album. However, Kaey and I, alongside some other artists will be doing a live stream event very soon so I’ll be sure to let you know when we have a date. Apart from that, not really. I’ll be attending the Virtual Glastonbury gig though which I’m really looking forward to. Kano at The Drumsheds was my last gig before lockdown so I’m really looking forward to his set. Well that all sounds great! Congrats on the new release and thanks for speaking with me again Victoria. Best of luck with releasing the rest of the album! High Rise is out now available for download or streaming via Spotify, YouTube, Deezer and iTunes. Keep your eyes peeled for more of her album releases dropping in 2021! * * * * © 2024 Drawn Tide.
