But Is it Worth The Hype? Not the news Talking Points What to watch World in Brief Welcome to the Bulletin, * The Federal Reserve is set to raise interest rates by another quarter point at its May 2-3 meeting before an expected pause for the rest of 2023, according to multiple outlets. * More than 3,000 people were evacuated from apartment buildings in the Russian city of Belgorod after an explosive device was found. The bomb, which didn't explode, was discovered in the same area where Russia accidently dropped a bomb earlier this week. * Sudanese troops are facilitating the evacuation of British, Chinese, French and U.S., citizens and diplomats from the country, Sudan's army chief said, as fighting between two clashing military factions enters a second week. The U.S. Embassy in Sudan responded saying it's unsafe to evacuate its citizens at this time; a three-day ceasefire for the Muslim holiday of Eid failed as fighting continues today. * A wave of GOP hopefuls are expected to enter the 2024 presidential race as early as next week. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson will formally launch his campaign on Wednesday, while former VP Mike Pence and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are expected to make a decision in the coming weeks. * The Supreme Court protected access to a widely used abortion medication as a lawsuit challenging the FDA's approval of mifepristone heads back to a lower court. * Russia is expelling more than 20 German diplomats in an alleged tit-for-tat move, according to Russia's Foreign Ministry. The ministry condemned Berlin's actions which it said resulted in another "mass expulsion of employees of Russian diplomatic missions in Germany." * Hunter Biden's lawyers and DOJ officials are set to discuss the ongoing investigation into the president's son next week, several sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN. The talks fall on the same week that President Joe Biden is expected to formally announce his 2024 reelection campaign. * The second weekend of Coachella is underway in Indio, California. Headliner Frank Ocean will not return, his team cites a leg injury, Blink-182 is set to take his spot. * In the ongoing war in Ukraine, Russian forces launched a missile attack against Kharkiv Saturday, according to city officials. Damage and casualty assessments are now underway. Meanwhile, Spain plans to deliver six Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine in the next few days, according to Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares. If you like this newsletter, please share it. Supreme Court Protects Access to Abortion Pill, For Now TL/DR: "As a result of the Supreme Court's stay, mifepristone remains available and approved for safe and effective use while we continue this fight in the courts," President Joe Biden said in response to the decision. The Supreme Court protected access to a widely used abortion pill, at least for now, sending a lawsuit challenging the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval of mifepristone back to a lower court. The Supreme Court's most conservative justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, publicly dissented in the late Friday decision. The ruling rejects a lower-court decision to suspend the FDA's approval of the medication, which Biden said would have "undermined FDA's medical judgment and put women's health at risk." This marked the biggest abortion-related case to reach SCOTUS since Roe v. Wade; its overturn has sparked several conservative states to limit or ban the procedure. Mifepristone is the most commonly used abortion method in the U.S. and has been used for over 20 years. The number of adults "dissatisfied" with abortion laws reached a record-high of 69% in 2023, according to a Gallup poll. What happens now? The case heads back to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which is scheduled to hear oral arguments on May 17. Vice President Kamala Harris said the administration vows to defend women’s rights to abortion and the FDA’s “ability to approve safe and effective drugs.” The battle for abortion rights and slew of anti-abortion legislation in many states will likely intensify in the coming months ahead of the 2024 election. Higher Fees Ahead for Homebuyers With Good Credit TL/DR: "In the short term, this may increase homeownership among the targeted group, but I'm afraid it could decrease homeownership among the middle class," National Association of Home Builders CEO Jerry Howard told Newsweek. Homeowners with good credit will soon notice a monthly rise in their mortgage fees by as much as $60 as a controversial new Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) rule takes effect next month. The rule aims to provide better rates to riskier borrowers by increasing fees to those with good credit. The change, facing criticism for being unfair and potentially ineffective, is part of the Biden administration's effort to assist first-time and low-income buyers while closing the racial homeownership gap. The rule follows an earlier move by the administration to lower mortgage rates for first-time buyers. The White House estimates 850,000 homeowners will save $800 this year under that earlier change. Mortgage rates remain high following home-buying surges during the coronavirus pandemic followed by a series of rate increases by the Fed to offset inflation, though the market is starting to cool. Studies have shown that helping borrowers secure lower mortgage rates through down payment assistance can open doors to home ownership for millions of people. What happens now? Experts worry this rule change, taking effect in May, could deplete home-buying participation within the middle class. Though the new rule aims to improve homeownership access for more people, GOP Rep. Michael Lawler of New York said it “unfairly penalizes” Americans with high credit scores. The National Association of Realtors is encouraging FHFA, which is standing by its new rule, to avoid implementing fee increases for borrowers with good credit. Jim Jordan's Crusade Against Alvin Bragg Hits Another Roadblock TL/DR: The latest ruling temporarily blocking a subpoena ordered by Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio “reflects no judgment regarding the merits of the parties’ respective positions,” Judge Beth Robinson wrote. The battle between Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg devolved into back-to-back court orders this week. Their dispute, which one judge described as "political theater," was sparked by Bragg's recent indictment of former President Donald Trump. Jordan wants to subpoena former prosecutor Mark Pomerantz for questioning on his prior involvement in the investigation. Bragg says Jordan's efforts are an "unconstitutional attack by members of Congress." An appeals court blocked the subpoena hours after a lower court ordered Pomerantz to comply. As Jordan pushes for information from Bragg's office, other congressional Republicans who support Trump are criticizing Bragg for bringing criminal charges against a presidential candidate. While a handful of Republicans have announced plans to challenge Trump for the 2024 nomination, the former president ontinues polling as GOP voters' top choice. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is reportedly planning to officially announce his bid for re-election next week. What happens now? Whether Pomerantz will ultimately be ordered to comply with Jordan’s subpoena remains to be seen. Bragg and Pomerantz have until this afternoon to further explain for the court their argument against Pomerantz’s requested appearance before Congress. A three-judge panel will next review the motion. The case against Trump is meanwhile moving forward as Trump’s attorneys assess which motions to file as they fight the charges. Other investigations involving Trump are also in progress. U.K. Deputy Prime Minister Resigns Over Bullying Investigation TL/DR: “I undertook to respect the outcome, and I keep my word,” Raab said after his resignation. “But this decision is flawed and sets a dangerous precedent, which will paralyze the ability of ministers to deliver for the British people.” U.K. Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab has resigned following the culmination of a protracted investigation into allegations that he bullied members of his staff. In November 2022, an inquiry was set up by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after eight formal complaints were made concerning Raab's behavior while acting as foreign secretary, Brexit secretary, and justice secretary over a period of more than four years. In the weeks before the probe, Raab committed to resigning from his role if the claims made against him were deemed justified and did so Friday morning as the findings were published. However, he later published a scathing article in the Daily Telegraph in which he criticized the report, insisting his behavior in government was a byproduct of him "setting high standards" and claiming that by "setting the threshold for bullying so low, this inquiry has set a dangerous precedent." What happens now? Raab’s resignation will likely hurt an already beleaguered Rishi Sunak. After years of scandal and upheaval across multiple Conservative governments, Sunak’s self-cultivated image as a calming presence in Downing Street is now under threat. The opposition Labour Party has already labeled him as “weak” for failing to push Raab before he jumped. Furthermore, Raab is firmly within the right-wing camp of the Conservative Party. His presence in the government gave Sunak, seen as a more moderate figure, broader appeal across a party currently experiencing a crisis of factionalism. For example, Raab is a close ally of former PM Boris Johnson, whose ousting as leader in September last year has left a deep divide within the party, and some lawmakers in the pro-Johnson camp hold a grudge against Sunak for his role in bringing down that government. How Saudi Arabia Is Playing a Role in Drying Up The Colorado River TL/DR: "One of the most egregious aspects of this water giveaway is that it is shortchanging our schools and our kids," Mayes said. "We need to be maximizing the amount of money that our schools receive from state trust land and the water beneath it." A farming scheme facilitated by Saudi Arabia in Arizona has come under fire amid the state's ongoing water shortages. Since 2014, Fondomonte Arizona, a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabian dairy company Almarai, has been using nearly 10,000 acres of farmland in the state to harvest alfalfa which is then shipped back to Saudi Arabia for use as cattle feed. Lawmakers in the state have come under fire for selling the land for just $25 an acre and not introducing limitations to the volume of groundwater land owners can extract. Around 88% of the western U.S. is currently experiencing severe drought, with lakes supplying the Colorado River currently at all-time lows. Arizona is in a particularly tricky position as it is not only supposed to rely on groundwater as an emergency supply if other sources fail, but it currently has no way of measuring how much groundwater is being used up by privately-owned farms such as those run by Fondomonte. What happens now? Newly elected Arizona attorney general Kris Mayes is seeking to end the state’s arrangement with Saudi Arabia. In a 16-point plan to stop what she calls the “Saudi water grab.” She believes the deal, facilitated by Republican former state governor Doug Ducey, may have violated the Arizona constitution’s “Gift Clause,” which prohibits the state government from giving anything of value owned by the state to a private entity for less than their face value. Mayes believes the market value of the land owned by Fondomonte is around $242 per acre-foot, as this is the amount the Central Arizona Project charges its customers for water use, and has said that she will attempt to recoup the cost of the land from the Saudi-back firm and funnel it back into the state’s school system. Coachella Is Back. But Is it Worth The Hype? TL/DR: The Valley Music and Arts Festival continues this weekend after disappointed fans demand refunds following an underwhelming Frank Ocean performance. Coachella's second weekend continues through Sunday after the first ended in backlash for alternative R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean. The hyped headliner returned to the stage after a six-year hiatus only to deliver a lackluster performance, dropping out of the second-week slot citing an ankle injury. Fans were upset, as searches for "Coachella refund" increased by 697% after Ocean's cancellation, according to Google data. This begs the question: is the festival worth paying for potential disappointment? While music festivals are by no means cheap, Coachella holds up its reputation of being on the pricier side. $549 is needed for a general admission ticket. The VIP experience doubles that price, starting at $1,069 pre-tax for advertised amenities like air-conditioned restrooms, shaded seating, and food & drink vendors that have received a lot of flak for their tagged-on expense. One TikTok creator recently went viral after she reported paying $64 for two iced coffees and two burritos. For more stories like this, subscribe to Newsweek's For the Culture newsletter sent out every Tuesday and Thursday. What happens now? Saturday and Sunday will see more performances from star-studded music artists such as BLACKPINK, RosalĂa, Björk and pop-punk trio Blink-182, who will take over what was originally Frank Ocean’s set. Ocean provided a statement to Rolling Stone on his performance, describing it as “chaotic” and not what he “intended to show,” but assured fans he’d see them soon. In case you can’t attend Coachella, Youtube will be live streaming every performance for free, recently renewing a deal to platform the festival through 2026. Not the news 'I Was in the Pittsburgh Trans Debate. Activists Had Me Scared for My Life' I've spoken on college campuses at least a dozen times so far in my fledgling career as a right-leaning journalist and political commentator. While I've faced at least some degree of angry pushback on almost every occasion, I've never felt physically unsafe—until this week. When I agreed to debate the controversial traditionalist pundit Michael Knowles on the question of whether the government should regulate transgenderism out of existence—he made waves for calling for the "eradication of transgenderism from public life" at the Conservative Political Action Conference—I knew it would be controversial. But I still wasn't fully prepared for what I was about to walk into. The Full STORY Talking Points * "I don't believe that he is a master genius who is sitting, planning where to move his pieces, and pulling the strings. The system is very complicated, it's not simplified. There are buddies of Putin, and there are enemies of his. They recognize that the alpha is still there, but he is weakening. Obviously, the weaker he is, the more frantic movements will happen." Vadym Prystaiko, Ukraine's ambassador to the U.K., told Newsweek, adding that Ukrainians want Putin dead, regardless of his successor. * "As a result of an NFL investigation, it came to our attention that a few of our players had violated the league's gambling policy. These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules. We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward." Days before this year's NFL Draft, Detroit Lions General Manager Brad Holmes announced the team is severing ties with Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore after the NFL suspended both players "indefinitely" for gambling violations. * "Today, I encourage all Americans to reflect on the need to protect our precious Earth; to heed the call to combat our climate and biodiversity crises while growing the economy; and to keep working for a healthier, safer, more equitable future for all." President Joe Biden said nature "demands action" in a proclamation that officially recognized Earth Day 2023. Environmental advocates have "called us all to conscience" and "inspired us to reject the false choice between a sustainable planet and a strong economy," Biden said. "Today we are continuing to prove that we can and must demand both." What to watch * Former President Donald Trump is expected to address the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition spring kickoff event this evening. Trump is scheduled to deliver his remarks virtually at 8 p.m. CDT. Several other Republicans expected to challenge Trump for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination are also slated to attend. * Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, rumored to be considering a run for president, will not be in Iowa alongside other top Republicans but is instead expected to headline the Utah GOP Organizing Convention taking place today in Orem. * The second weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival continues at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Featured artists include Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, blink-182, and more. Skrillex, Four Tet and Fred Again are expected to fill in for Frank Ocean, who dropped out earlier this week, and close out the festival tomorrow. * Communities around the world will be holding tree planting and environmental cleanup events today in celebration of Earth Day. * Taylor Swift, The 1975 and The Cure are among many artists participating in Record Store Day by releasing new exclusive content and collections, which go on sale today at participating record stores. * The iconic white suit John Travolta wore in Saturday Night Fever is up for auction this weekend alongside several other movie props featured in Julien's Auctions and Turner Classic Movies' "Hollywood: Classic and Contemporary" collection. The auction starts at 10 a.m. PDT in Beverly Hills, California.
