About the test
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common infections that spread from
person to person during sexual activity and skin-to-skin contact. People with
STDs may not have any signs or symptoms and this can lead to serious
complications. If you’re sexually active and have unprotected sex, it’s
important to screen for STDs so you can stay informed about your sexual health.
Testing is the only way to know for sure whether you have a sexually transmitted
infection. The STD Basic Panel individually screens for chlamydia, gonorrhea,
syphilis, HIV-1, and -2.

WHAT’S TESTED

The STD Basic Panel screens for 4 of the most common sexually transmitted
infections found in the United States today1-3,5,6:

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by
Chlamydia trachomatis. The CDC reports chlamydia as the most commonly reported
STD in the United States. However, some men and most women with chlamydia may
never experience symptoms, which makes it underreported and very easy to spread
from person to person. For men, testing for chlamydia is usually done with a
physician-collected swab; for women, with a physician-collected or
self-collected vaginal swab; or, for both men and women, a sample of urine.
Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics. If chlamydia is not treated, it
usually does not go away on its own. It can stay within the body for years
without symptoms, and may flare up and cause serious complications. In men,
untreated chlamydia can spread to the testicles and epididymis (tubes that carry
sperm from the testicles). In women, untreated chlamydia can spread to
reproductive organs and can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and ectopic
pregnancy. Infertility may result in both men and women.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria
gonorrhoeae. The CDC reports gonorrhea as the second most commonly reported STD
in the United States. However, both men and women may never experience symptoms,
which makes it underreported and very easy to spread from person-to-person. It
can cause infection in the genitals, throat, and rectum. Testing for genital
gonorrhea is usually done with a sample of urine or a penile or vaginal swab.
Gonorrhea is easily treatable, but usually will not go away on its own. If
gonorrhea is treated early, it is unlikely to lead to complications; however, if
it is not treated, it can spread and may cause serious complications. In men,
untreated gonorrhea can spread to the testicles and prostate gland. In women,
untreated gonorrhea can spread to reproductive organs and can cause pelvic
inflammatory disease (PID) and ectopic pregnancy. Infertility may be a result in
both men and women.
Syphilis
Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema
pallidum. Men and women may never experience symptoms of syphilis, which makes
it very easy to spread from person to person. It can cause infection in the
genitals, throat, and rectum and can lead to sores, rashes, and lesions on your
body. Testing for syphilis is usually done with a sample of blood (collected by
finger prick). Syphilis is treatable, but usually will not go away on its own.
Treatment with antibiotics is very effective; however, if your test results are
positive, it is important to start treatment immediately and get tested
frequently. If syphilis is not treated, it can cause damage to the brain, eyes,
heart, nerves, bones, joints, and liver.
HIV-1 and HIV-2
HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a sexually transmitted viral infection.
Without treatment, HIV infection may cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
(AIDS). HIV attacks the immune cells and weakens the body's defenses against
infection. Initially, men and women infected with HIV may have no or mild
symptoms for many years, which makes it easy to spread through unprotected sex.
The virus can pass from person to person through contact with HIV-infected
semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk, or blood.Testing for HIV is done with a
sample of blood (collected by finger prick). There are 2 types of HIV found in
the US, HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is the most common. Our test checks for both
types of HIV. There is no cure for HIV or AIDS, but there are treatment options
that can slow the progression of the disease. HIV does not go away on its own.
If left untreated, HIV can cause damage to the immune system and may develop
into AIDS.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

The STD Basic Screening Panel can be performed in people with and without
symptoms of sexually transmitted infections. When symptoms do occur, they may
vary depending on the person and the infection. Some of the most common symptoms
include2,3,5,6:

 * Burning with urination
 * Increased urinary frequency
 * Itching or irritation of the vagina or penis
 * Discharge from the vagina or penis
 * Lower abdominal pain
 * Pain during sexual intercourse
 * Unusual vaginal bleeding
 * Pain in the scrotum or penis

There are many treatments for sexually transmitted infections. Testing is key
and treatment should be started as early as possible.

ELIGIBILITY

The STD Basic Screening Panel is for anyone who is sexually active. Even if you
don’t have any symptoms, you can still pass an STD along to another person
without knowing. You must be 18 years old or older to purchase.

FAQs
How do I know if I have an STD?

It is not always possible to know if you have an STD because many people do not
have symptoms. Testing is the only way to know for sure if you have a sexually
transmitted infection. Some of the most common symptoms include:

 * Burning with urination
 * Increased urinary frequency
 * Itching or irritation of the vagina or penis
 * Discharge from the vagina or penis
 * Lower abdominal pain
 * Pain during sexual intercourse
 * Unusual vaginal bleeding
 * Pain in the scrotum or penis

Can STDs be treated?
Disease progression can be slowed with treatment. Remember that you can still
pass it to another person even while you are being treated. You should not have
sex again until your treatment has been completed.
I’m pregnant. Can I pass an STD to my baby?
It is possible to pass an STD to your unborn child. The baby could develop
health problems and may even be born early. If you are pregnant, it is important
to get tested for STDs as soon as possible and contact your OBGYN if you test
positive for an STD for next steps.
How do I protect myself from getting an STD?
The best way to protect yourself is to practice safe sex and to limit the number
of sexual partners that you have. Regular testing can help you detect STDs
early.
How often should I get checked for an STD?
Anyone who is sexually active should get tested at least once a year. If you
have new or multiple partners, consider getting tested more frequently.
Who should get checked for STDs?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) makes the following STD
annual screening recommendations, even in the absence of symptoms:

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

 * Sexually active teenage girls and women (< 25 years old)
 * Sexually active women (≥ 25 years old) who have sex with more than 1 partner
   and do not use condoms
 * Sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)
 * Men and women who are infected with HIV

Syphilis

 * Pregnant women
 * Sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)
 * Men and women who are infected with HIV

HIV-1 and HIV-2

 * Sexually active men and women (including teenagers)
 * Pregnant women
 * Men who have sex with men (MSM)

Accessibility StatementCompliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone
and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the broadest
possible audience, regardless of ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web
Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA
level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people
with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us
ensure that the website is accessible to blind people, people with motor
impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as
accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that
allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user
interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the
background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application
remediates the website’s HTML, adapts its functionality and behavior for
screen-readers used by blind users, and for keyboard functions used by
individuals with motor impairments.

If you wish to contact the website’s owner please use the website's form

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet
Applications) technique, alongside various behavioral changes, to ensure blind
users visiting with screen-readers can read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s
functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they
immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can
browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of
the most important screen-reader requirements:

 1. Screen-reader optimization: we run a process that learns the website’s
    components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when
    updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with
    meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide
    accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons,
    search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs;
    element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others.

    Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images. It
    provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based
    description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not
    described. It will also extract texts embedded within the image using an OCR
    (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader
    adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard
    combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn
    the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

    These adjustments are compatible with popular screen readers such as JAWS,
    NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack.

 2. Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the
    website’s HTML and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the
    website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the
    website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow
    keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key,
    navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill
    them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.

    Additionally, keyboard users will find content-skip menus available at any
    time by clicking Alt+2, or as the first element of the site while navigating
    with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by
    moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, not allowing
    the focus to drift outside.

    Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F”
    (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as
possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major
systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share, including Google
Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS, and NVDA
(screen readers), both for Windows and MAC users.

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their
needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are
in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological
solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our
accessibility, adding, updating, improving its options and features, and
developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal
level of accessibility following technological advancements. If you wish to
