Summary

As states and cities across the US commit to net zero-emission goals, ports are
at the center of the energy transformation debate and are coming under
increasing scrutiny to lower their carbon output. Electrifying activities such
as shore powering, cargo handling through cranes and forklifts, cold storage,
and drayage provide a long-term solution to reduce harmful emissions. However,
this transition means an overhaul of the existing electrical infrastructure at
ports, which could be complex, and managing all its facets will require a
collaborative approach. The good news is that the technology is available,
utilities are cooperating, and support is forthcoming at the federal, state, and
municipal levels.

The federal government has already approved USD3 billion in funding under the
Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to support the purchase and installation of
zero-emission equipment and technology at ports. The US Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) have programs that
cover funding for port electrification. Several other federal agencies also
provide grants for greening the ports.

A recent cooperation agreement between the states of California, Oregon,
Washington and Canada’s British Columbia included an initiative to decarbonize
port equipment and operations and to pursue zero-carbon shipping. Meanwhile,
many ports across the country, such as Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Diego, San
Francisco, Savannah, Seattle, New Orleans, New Jersey and New York, are already
taking initiatives to electrify large parts of their operations and
infrastructure.

In this context, Global Transmission is organizing a conference on “Port
Electrification US” on June 20-21, 2023 at The Westin Long Beach.

The mission of the conference is to highlight the opportunities and solutions to
transition to full electrification of ports. The conference will feature
engaging panel discussions and insightful presentations on challenges in
electrifying ports, strategies to progress to greener ports, learnings from
ongoing projects, relevant technologies, and best practices.

The event will bring together policymakers, port authorities, terminal
operators, state transport departments, local government officials, technology
providers, electric power utilities, logistics companies, charging solution
providers, and industry experts to present their perspectives, share the lessons
learned, and discuss solutions for accelerating port electrification in the US.
