We focus on providing a unique roleplay experience set in a fictional, yet realistic Medieval setting. Besides this, we also pride ourselves on our tightly-knit and all-inclusive community of wonderful people from all over the world. This documentation site was created by the Creators of Medieval Discord and is maintained by them and the community. This site should cover every feature of MD thoroughly. > In case of a typo, missing or poorly explained feature, and/or an issue with > the doc, feel free to contact either Torrino or Alex so they can fix it! HOW DO I START ROLEPLAYING? First things first, you have to make a character. Your character is the person you play as in this world, therefore without one, you will be unable to send messages In-Character (IC) or use IC commands to interact with other users via their characters. HOW DO I MAKE MY FIRST CHARACTER? Don't worry if it's your first time making a character; we've all been there. To make your character, you'll need to head on over to the #character-creator channel on Medieval Discord and use the create-character command. The channel will have some rudimentary information in it. However, if you want a more in-depth guide on how to make a character make sure to check out the Character Creator page on this document: pageCharacter Creator FIRST TIME ROLEPLAYING ON MD? So you've made your first character and you're clueless as to how roleplay works? It's easy, don't worry! When you start out, you'll be without a job. Your first order of business should be to start making money somehow. When you first start out, you can choose between three paths: Commoner, Clergy, and Military. * The Commoner path is made up of three routes: Fame (people who specialize in creating stuff to sell on the market), Infamy (criminals and those who make money through dubious means), and Service (tavern workers and entertainers). * The Clergy path is made up of three routes: Preachment (those who focus on running the Church and spreading the Gospel), Inquisition (those who enforce the will of the Pope through violence and intimidation), and Medicinal (those who focus on healing and preventing illness). * The Military path is made up of one route, the City Watch (the "police force" of Rosewood). To join these paths/routes, you will have to find and speak to one of the recruiting NPCs. Find out more about how to join on the pages themselves or by looking up the NPCs on the Non-Player Characters page. Depending on what you choose you can start in the #workshops if you're Fame, the #cathedral if you're Clergy, the #guardhouse if you're part of the Watch. Alternatively, you can start in your home (each character gets a designated channel where their home is; check Housing) or you can always start in the #main_square which is the heart of the City. The majority of RP takes place in the City of Rosewood, the capital city of the Kingdom of France in the year 1223 (note that the year will change depending on our own time, e.g. it would be 1224 in 2024); time passes by in real-time, meaning 1 In-Character day is 1 day in real life. For more information regarding the City of Rosewood (the main setting of MD) check out our lore mega-post: An Overview of the City of Rosewood - Medieval Discord RoleplayMedieval Discord Note that Medieval Discord is a realistic alt-history roleplay server. We are grounded in realism but have made adjustments to the lore to suit our needs. Rosewood, for example, does not exist in real life. HOW DO I MAKE MONEY? The best and most reliable way to get a steady source of income is to join a Path. Paths have built-in mechanics that allow them to earn money (either custom commands or weekly paychecks). However, if you're still unsure which one to join or if you're looking to make some money on the side, you should look into these options: * The Work Command — Allows you to work every 4h for a small amount of buckles. * The Forage Command — Allows you to forage in the forest. You can sell what you find. * The Fishing Command — Allows you to catch fish and sell them. You need a rod for this. As a final option, if you need money quickly and think you can make it back just as quickly, you can go to the bank and take out a Loan. HOW IS MEDIEVAL DISCORD DIFFERENT? WHAT IS THIS WORLD LIKE? Unlike other servers that need to have their own homebrew worlds, Medieval Discord uses history and realism for its worldbuilding. Because of this, there is no lore barrier to entry and anyone can start roleplaying as long as they know the general conventions of the Middle Ages. Medieval Discord is set in 13th-century France, specifically the City of Rosewood which is a fictitious medieval city based on medieval Paris. It is important to note that MD is set in an alt-history timeline, therefore the geopolitics and some social conventions are different in order to suit the needs of the server (women have more rights within the City of Rosewood, for example). Read these lore posts to get a general grasp of MD's lore (NOT OBLIGATORY!) * Historia Magna (a general overview of historical events from 800 to around 1080 - is heavily biased) * History of the Empire - Revisited (a rebuttal of the Historia Magna) * The Fifty Years' War (an objective account of the war that ended the Age of the Empire) * Historia Francorum (the general history of this region) * An Overview of the City of Rosewood (everything you need to know about Rosewood) * Families of Rosewood (the most famous families in Rosewood and France) * The French Legal Code (the legal system explained in-depth) * Languages of the People (how language differs from our timeline) * Realms of the World in 1220 (a map of the known world) * French Realms in 1220 (how the Kingdom of France is divided internally) * Carta Sirius Magni (a chronicle of the Imperial/Royal Sirius dynasty) If you liked what you read and want more lore, we have an entire page dedicated to it on our main site: Lore - Medieval DiscordMedieval Discord WHO DO I ASK FOR HELP? If you have any questions, please don't be afraid to ask them in the #md forums channel. That's the place for any and all questions related to Medieval Discord. Alternatively, you can DM or ping any staff member with a question you might have and they'll help you out. If it's a bigger issue, you can always DM the Owners and they'll get back to you as soon as possible. Finally, Medieval Discord has a great community full of people ready to help you. You can always ask for help in the general chat and one of our Certified Members might reply with an answer or direct you to another avenue. WHAT DOES THIS COMMAND DO? You found a command and have no idea what it does. There are two main ways you can resolve this issue: 1. You can use the search function on this site and look for the command's page and read all about it. 2. You can use the help command in any channel for a list of commands. Then you can use the help command again, this time adding the command you want to learn more about. Note that on Medieval Discord, the command prefix is `r!` meaning help would be r!help WHAT DOES THIS ROLE MEAN? If you've stumbled upon a role on the server that you're having some trouble with, you should be able to input it into the search bar on this site and get a page dedicated to it. If that doesn't work, you can always ask someone to help you out! WHAT ARE THE RULES? For an In-Depth list of the rules, check out the following page: pageIn-Depth Rules However, no one is expected to know all those rules. If you're new and/or a casual user, knowing and respecting the following guidelines will suffice: 1. Keep RP realistic and appropriate to the time period. 2. You can only have one account and one character at a time. 3. Your character can only be in one place at a time and has to move from place to place (channel to channel) by using the move command. 4. To interact with another character, your character must first see them. 5. Do not advertise your servers/original content. 6. Do not use any information your character wouldn't know while roleplaying. 7. Keep In-Character and Out-of-Character separate. 8. We will not tolerate hate speech. 9. Be kind to others in general chat and their DMs. 10. Follow what Staff tells you to do. 11. You can always report Staff members to the Owners. 12. If something/someone upsets you, you have to report it to us so we can handle it. Otherwise, we can't help you. 13. Do not abuse our bot by spamming it. 14. We won't tolerate any NSFW content on the server. WHAT IF I LEAVE THE SERVER? DO I GET MY ROLES BACK? Don't worry, even if you leave the server you will probably be able to get your roles and your character back without issue. However, if you leave the server for any reason (including getting kicked) and you don't return in 14 days or more, the data associated with your Discord account will be irretrievably lost. Simply put, after 14 days, our bot will purge all your data from our database. This is to save server and storage costs of retaining data of characters that won't ever come back. Our Patrons' data is an exception to this rule. More info on our Patreon.
