The eclipse is just a couple of short weeks away! Melissa from @metroparkfriend
is here to walk us through how to build a solar eclipse viewer out of some
household supplies, so that we can safely view the eclipse 🌒 Looking for
glasses? Stop by any nature center this weekend or Prairie Oaks Metro Park on
Sunday to pick up a free pair, and learn more about the eclipse (while supplies
last)! #cbusmetroparks #eclipseglasses

This short-eared owl was caught mid-flight by a visitor at Battelle Darby
Creek's wetlands earlier this month 🦉 Short-eared owls tend to prefer
grasslands, and build their nests on the ground! They feast on small mammals
like mice, voles, and even some smaller birds. #cbusmetroparks 📸 Sarah

This week, our resource management staff, with the help of other staff members
from around the park district, conducted prairie burns at Battelle Darby Creek
🔥 These controlled burns knock back invasives and other plants that would
otherwise keep native prairie plants from growing, and have tons of other
benefits for the land as well! #cbusmetroparks

Is it spring yet? You may have spotted harbinger of spring (erigenia bulbosa)
along the trails - it's an early-blooming member of the parsley and carrot
family 🥕 It's also often called pepper-and-salt because of how the white petals
contrast with the darker anthers! Fun fact: it takes 6-7 years before it
produces its first flowers 🌼 #cbusmetroparks

A great game to play outside is always "what's that sound?" This time, we
discovered some chorus frogs at Glacier Ridge! Chorus frogs can be heard from up
to half a mile away, which is quite far for such a little frog 🐸

Let's talk about the sky! Some of you may find yourselves wondering, "why is the
sky blue?" Light is the main contributor - when sunlight reaches Earth's
atmosphere, it is scattered in all directions by the gases and particles in the
air. Blue light is scattered more than the other colors because it travels in
shorter, smaller waves, which is why we see blue sky (most of the time) 🌤️
